Osteophytes ( lower spine)
« on: 15 July, 2017, 09:16:44 am »
Has anyone any experience and/or advice about these?
They are apparently bone "spurs" in, typically arthritic, joints. Mine have developed in the lower spine, and have recently, and fairly suddenly, impinged on the nerves to the legs, giving pain and pins and needles.
As cycling involves bending the spine forward, it's easier for me to cycle rather than walk or stand, but I do still have some tingling, and maybe a loss of power.
I guess the questions for me are how to manage, is there a solution, or is it the beginning of the end of over 50 years of cycling ( which is also my social life).

Essentially, these are normal, a part of the aging process. There is no magic cure or even a non magic one. Managing the problem is a matter of staying active, regular exercise which can include yoga/Pilates type to keep the lower back flexible, occasional (and I mean occasional) use of medications if it gets bad and keep cycling.

Also, stay out of medical hands for as long as possible and always remember you are not ill.
