How do I remove this crankset?
« on: 15 July, 2017, 10:46:18 pm »
I'd like to swap the crankset on my winter bike for another one I've got lying around, but having removed the non-drive side crank, I'm a bit confused as to what sort of crankset the existing one actually is (I've only ever removed/installed HT2 and square taper).

The crankset on there is apparently a Samox - one of these: https://www.evanscycles.com/pinnacle-samox-crankset-for-arkose-EV281592

It looks like this (with apologies for photo quality!):

Is this the sort of thing I can just take the mallet to? I didn't want to try first, just in case I'm missing something fundamental!

Looks to me like it goes together (and, importantly, comes apart) like HTii.

The answered question on the Evans site says it's compatible with FSA bottom brackets, which I think would support that assumption - not compatible with HTii, but assembled the same way.

Mind you, someone who actually knows will be along soon, so don't rely on my assurances from ignorance.

There will be a Torslanda along at any moment.

Hammer with a block of wood or a rubber mallet. Shouldn't take much effort.

Assume you have the correct BB for your replacement chainset?
VELOMANCER

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

My guess is one of these:
Those are for getting the BB cups/bearings off after you've removed the crankset.

If you remove the left hand crank it should just push out. You may be getting confused because you are able to remove the right hand crank unlike HTII cranks.

The tool you need to remove the BB looks to be that recommended above.

Be aware that not all FSA BB are the same. For some FSA BB the internal diameter is slightly larger than 24mm.
Clever enough to know I'm not clever enough.
