By pure coincidence I was re-watching das Boot yesterday.
There were 40,000 German submariners; 30,000 never made it home, it said.  The derelict submarine pens in Bordeaux's old docks are lit at night with an eerie red glow.

The best bit in that is still the continuous Arriflex shot from the rear E-motor room to the front torpedo room during a crash dive.
