Help on insurance claim for theft
« on: 15 January, 2018, 11:03:24 am »
My ghetto fixed wheeler was stolen at the weekend. Locked up (but evidently not with a beefy enough lock) at my local station, an area with a very moderate crime rate.
I'm just trying to work out what to tell the insurers.

The frame was a vintage Reynolds 531, which I'd had stripped & powder coated matt black to disguise its value.  What I'm wanting is to be able to do is point insurer to a modern equivalent as a guide to the replacement value, but I can't find any without delving into the realms of bespoke/custom build frames.  Naturally I'm expecting they'll reduce from the new value and there is an excess, but I'm hoping if I pitch it right the final payout might be enough to pay for another ebay frame and a few bits to dress it with.

Any suggestions?

I had this problem when my fixed gear frame was written off by a car, like you it was an older road frame powder coated.  The reference point that my local bike shop used when valuing it was the Genesis Flyer http://www.genesisbikes.co.uk/bikes/road/road-sportive/flyer/flyer, I think they retail for around £700 - which I was happy with (case still ongoing so can't say whether the valuation has been accepted). I also think these are pretty good bikes and slightly unusual for fixies with guard mounts, bottle cages and forward facing drop outs

Try this from Burls. http://www.burls.co.uk/titanium_stock.php   Scroll down ~half way for steel frames.

Not as much as the Genesis @ £495.
