Was that Burke & Hare's patch?

Yep.

It's good to see that the scaffolding is up in Mal Volio's original photos.  Obviously they've started the repair work, it shouldn't take them more than a century or two to finish it. ;D
Actually, it is rocket science.

The nearest castle to my house.

Odiham Castle

The dressed stone was removed in the 15th century, leaving the flint core.

I've just Googled that Longtown Castle.Very interesting.I have long had a fascination for castles, particularly the less well known ones;such as the one near Newtown, not far from the cabin.
I really should use this interest in conjunction with riding my bike to provide a reason to get some miles in.Last year I rode over to Tutbury castle(90 minutes easy ride) & had a marvelous day out for only £4 admission,a re-enactment display,a decent cafe,a good butchers at the castle,a lecture on it's history with heavy reference to Mary Queen of Scots(another of my interests)

There's a decent day walk that takes in 3 of our local ones.

An audax/tour to do some of the more decent ones is a good idea :)

I've been tempted to put together a '50 castles' Audax. Just on my local 1:25000 map (Explorer 380) there are 44 castles, mottes, roman camps or hill forts.

If I were to venture further than 15 miles from home I might find a few more.

I was only thinking that a South Easy Wales Castle Crawl could make a good forum ride.

If anyone cares to join me we can unearth the Orpheous pavement in a graveyard round the corner from here.

Oops - missed one. 45.

Yup. It's far too modern around here. Can't leave anything around for posterity for longer than a few tens of generations before some bugger builds on it. At least three stone circles and a plethora of standing stones too.

Somewhat OT but......
iirc there is a section of original Roman road somewhere in/near the Forest of Dean.
Can someone confirm this?

iPhone?

Yes.  I was impressed - no buggering about with a real camera involved; it was just a highly photogenic day.  I hadn't intended taking pics when I set out, but I was transfixed by the range of light and weather around :)

I was shown it as a small Volio by a friend of my parents.  Mrs MV knows of it, but Wikipedia reckons

Quote
The "Dean Road" still visible at Soudley is believed to be a mediaeval rebuilding of the Roman road, and would have been an important route for the transport of iron ore and finished metal products

Forest of Dean - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I suspect there's a lot of Roman stuff undiscovered up in the Forest; the Welsh side of the Wye abounds with it, but the Forest has always been a bit more wild & woolly....

No personal photo to add here sadly, but a link to Lewes Castle in East Sussex, which gives a brief explanation.

The link is interesting in other ways when you read the list over to the top right, as it then links you to other Castles, Cathedrals, Manor Houses, etc, round the country. Nice one!

Certainly never seen cycling south of Sussex
