YACF Memes?
« on: 22 September, 2010, 09:28:29 pm »
I know we have a number of memes that regularly do the rounds at YACF ('Do keep up at the back', 'Fuck Yeah Narwhals', '^This', 'I'll get my coat', etc. etc.).

But do we have any original ones that started here and have made it out into the big bad world? Could a dedicated army of YACFers post enough times on other fora to let loose our favourite memes?

An obvious candidate might be 'chain's a bit slack', but has anyone outside these walls used it?

I'd also like to propose a visual meme whenever it is necessary to indicate grit, determination and struggle, or at least an ironic indication of such (sorry Matt):

I picked up the 'chain's a bit slack' meme from uk.rec.cycling (along with marmite and kitchen pr0n) ages before I discovered YACF.

I've encountered "^ This" in various corners of the internet, I don't think it's in any way YACF-specific, though I'd probably default to "AOL" instead.

n+1 wasn't original, either.

What about fish pun threads?

Alive and well on alt.babylon5.uk since the late 90s, at least.

I think it did start on yACF though.

Only because I spent hours doing it in photoshop:-

I love you for that but as Susan Ivanovna says, all true love is unrequited (actually, that's one of my favourite bits of the show).

I imagine the 'Yellow Thong of Ambition' has only sullied YACF pages.

The Yellowed Thong of Ambition has appeared in a double page spread in the Audax UK magazine.

Nice try ... if (y)ACF is at least 30 years old ... :)

The tricky bit is avoiding the true in-jokes i.e. anything that refers to a member (fnarr).

Which is a shame, as I can see me using phrases like:

When do memes become in jokes that exclude 'incomers'?

They are mostly explained in the Office Reception thread.  All sites have memes, b3ta probably being the worst (incidentally, what's happened to the magic donkey?).

Oh totally, it wasn't a criticism - and b3ta is a good example, being so memetastic that on the surface it looks impenetrable.  Good point, what has happened to the magic donkey?  Perhaps he was retired when the one in weebl and bob died?

It might just be me, but "made of cheese" originated from here didn't it?

Oh that and "It's mostly downhill from here", which will probably only make sense to those in the North :)
