tennis should be out unless it's only open to non professional players, equestrian stuff should be out although it's nice to beat the Germans at it,
basketball, handball, and loads of others ICBA to mention,

cricket should stay well clear of the lympix and golf I can't believe they've even considered it real nobs game, they're so fecking bone idle they have some lacky pulling their kit around for them, football of course should be kicked out thats another nobs game,

however rugby 7's I can see the appeal of that, fast game and over really quick, only 10 minutes each way and the yanks are crap at it :)

have I got the right thread ?

Pre-emptively, golf. Bloody golf's in the next Olympics!

If golf's in, we should have darts and snooker.

If golf's in, it should be the kind with windmills.

Get rid of tennis. At least this year they seemed to be taking it seriously, but there have been too many years where the pros treated it as a jolly.

It still wasn't as daft as some of the early road races when they let the pros take part for the first time. Anyone remember Ulrich and his team-mates taking the piss in Atlanta? Get rid of that, too. But keep the track racing, obviously.

Do we really need the modern pentathlon?

I'm not a fan of the horsie stuff, but I'm prepared to admit that it's mainly class prejudice. If showjumping, why not flat races and steeplechases?

All the mincing about on horses should go.

The ice dancing in the winter lympix should go too.

Balls, I meant Robin Cousins - the one from Bristol.

Remarkable that Britain should produce two consecutive world champions in a winter sport.

I think that this thread, and its twin sister, are indicative that forummers are bored out of their minds now that the cycling has finished.

I suppose I could ride down to Hadleigh tomorrow to watch a bit of mountain biking, or just soak up the ambience.

Not wanting to start a thread just for this, but where are the BMX events taking place? Are they at Hadleigh (I'm assuming that BMX is different from mountain biking) or somewhere else?

Just North of the velodrome apparently.

Basically they're just racing across rough ground, so no, not different.
But the venues are different, and there are separate medals awarded.

This thread and its evil twin are supporting my theory.

This thread has lots of impassioned (and possibly serious) suggestions, with justifications.
The other one is 99% a bit of a laugh.

So I don't think many people want ANY more sports in the Lympics, but most want to get rid of some. I think there are too many full stop, so would support a "no new events" policy whole-heartedly. And would cautiously support a drive to remove more - now that cycling has led the way.

A good example of what I mean, as are John Curry & Torvill and bloody Dean.

Remarkable that Britain should produce two consecutive world champions in a winter sport mincing about on ice some 'entertainment' that is only of interest to the UK public when the Brits are winning.

All the horse stuff, unless they start giving the horses the medals.

Handball, it's only there because the Nazis liked it.

Synchronised swimming.

Shooting.

FOOTBALL.

Whaaa!?! Handball is frikkin' awesome and should definitely stay.

Olympic football should go.

Trap shooting could go, but target shooting should stay. However, be changed to a biathlon format and use larger calibre rifles firing long distance:

2k cross country run
1000m shoot
2k cross country run
800m shoot
2k cross country run
600m shoot

Rhythmic gymnastics could go.

Horsey stuff could go.

Any sport not yet in the olympics, that was invented for a Sc-fi movie.

Yeah, "mincing about on ice" is exactly what it looks like to me. But then all these "Come Dancing" and "Strictly Ballroom" tv shows look like "mincing about on vinyl" or parquet or whatever they use, and they're pretty popular AFAICT. So I think it's a case of "only of interest to the UK public when it's on TV".

Anyway, if we can have artistic, subjective sports competitions like those and synchronised swimming, I propose sculpture for the Olympics.

Some sensible suggestions, but others I disagree with.

Agree on horses. There are major issues of accessibility & cost. If we're going to have any horse event it should be one which isn't in now, i.e. mounted archery. 'Cos it's bloody brilliant to watch & requires tremendous skill.

I'm not keen on subjective impressions stuff, but I can accept some of the points scored events, with certain provisos. They have to drop all the 'artistic impression' marks. It's got to be on the precision, height, difficulty etc. of the moves.

Therefore drop, or change the marking of, any sport which currently requires mincing around. E.g. tumbling is very impressive to watch, & needs great skill & strength (thus fitting the Olympic criteria pretty well), but the posing & arm-waving required by the judging makes it entirely inappropriate, and a lot worse to watch.  The gymnasts hurling themselves around is what counts, & what people like to see. Cut the crap & I'd let it stay.

Ditto with other gymnastics. This means, of course, no rhythmic gymnastics.

Fewer swimming events. Dominate swimming, & you're near the top of the medals table straight away.

Shooting's fine, IMO. It's physical skill, & objectively marked.

None of the team sports where the Olympics are secondary to the world championships or equivalent. So, no football, no rugby (keep it out!), no cricket.

Every sport should have wide (in a geographic sense) appeal. Baseball, for example, wouldn't qualify because not enough of the world plays it at a competitive level. This would also keeps out kabaddi & some other regionally popular sports, but provides an incentive for those sports to spread.

Basketball should be dropped. Too big outside the Olympics. Any sport which players are paid to play by rich firms (miscalled clubs) which see participation in the Olympics as a distraction should be out.

Tennis - again, too big & rich outside the Olympics.

I know it's a winter sport, but Curling - WTF?

It's one chap bunging a heavy thing across the ice and two others sweeping up before they even make a mess.

If they have curling in the Snowlympics, then where's the crown green bowls during the summer?

And then what?  Croquet?  Horseshoes?  Darts?

Rationalise swimming. Keep the millions of distances and even team events if you like but get rid of the requirement for specific strokes. Just line them up and fastest to the finish wins, regardless of using freestyle, backstroke or whatever.

No, do it the other way. Keep the different strokes (because the world don't move to the beat of just one drum and what might be right for you might not be right for some) and cut down the millions of distances.

They can choose whatever stroke they like but the fastest wins. If that means that everybody does freestyle, fine. It is a race so choosing a slower stroke is just perverse. On that line, get rid of racewalking, they should be running.
