Ghost in the shell. Passable hokum with copious plot holes but Binoche. Blade Runner meets Lucy and a few Yakuzi gangster movies. Struggled with the Portuguese subtitling of the Japanese, but who wouldn't.
It is simpler than it looks.

A Simple Plan on iplayer.

Billy Bob Thornton and the late Bill Paxton weaving a very tangled web.  Enjoyable.

Deepwater Horizon. Basically chubby Texans played by Hollywood stars. I think we should all bail from real life and get stars to play us. The Accountant. It might have been alright but I snoozed through a lot of it so one moment Ben was doing some sums and the next he was covered in blood and stabbing people in the head. I too found filling out my annual 1040 stressful. The Magnificent Seven. A bit of a pointless remake but I can watch anything with Denzel Washington in. Considering his reputation, I don't know why people keep picking fights with him.

Didn't we have a casting thread somewhere?  Or was it another place?

(Victoria Lambert, obviously, though she's no longer in the business after one series of perfection.)

GET OUT   Nothing special in the acting, directing, or sound departments but an interesting enough plot and concept to keep you thoroughly engaged throughout.  Strange hybrid of comedy/horror/sci-fi/social commentary.  Shows what can be done on a small budget with a strong idea.  Recommended!

Hacksaw Ridge. I think, mostly bad. However, the story is mostly true, which was pretty amazing.

However, the usual movie exagerations, which were completely unnecessary.
A good example is the cliff that he lowered people down from. Here's how it looked in the movie vs real life:

Ghost in the Shell. Somewhat ruined by my wife whispering 'how come she doesn't have nipples?' at the beginning. That's because she's a cyborg, of course. How come she has breasts then? This conversation rolled for hours without resolution.

As said, enjoyable sci-fi hokum and looked glorious on the Imax (other than one CGI scene that looked a bit c1996).

John dies at the end.  Started to watch it months ago, gave up after ~45 mins thinking "huh, bloody druggies", picked it up again yesterday and quite enjoyed the rest.

We watched a very silly comedy yesterday, The CIA with 'The Rock' and someone else.

It was actually really rather funny, which is what you want in a comedy in the end.  Next year's best picture?  Not really.

Anthropoid

True story about an assassination plot in WW2 Czechoslovakia. Good film, but oh boy was it harrowing and violent in places. I found it very uncomfortable.

That is a good film, though the mock Czech accents were a bit grating at first. The bridge near the beginning is, I believe, this one, now a cycle path and approximately the distance from Prague shown on the sign in the film:

The Book of Love

Very good. Recommended. Life affirming story of coping after the bereavement of a partner, with lots of added quirkiness and fun thrown in.

Mrs Q sat me down to watch the 2002 nasty alien invasion work of anti-semite Ken Livingstone Mel Gibson last night.  I then had to man up and go and check the sheep and put the bins out in the dark.

Whilst keeping an eye out for scary green men.

Also saw Ghost in the shell the other night.  Mostly good, albeit not so far removed from the original plot of Robocop.  All a bit emotionless, though Juliette Binoche acts her socks off.  Best of a bad lot at the flicks at the moment.

Watched High Rise last night, almost switched it off in the first fifteen mins, but persevered and quite liked it by the end.

Ghostbusters (2016)

Given that I'd been led to set the bar of expectations very low, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It's a bit clunky in places but also very funny in others.

Like any remake, it didn't need to be made, but it's a long way from being the worst example.

My wife just booked me tickets to the new Alien film.

In space no one can hear you scream. In the Waterloo IMAX, I guess we'll find out.

Boy Wonder

Well, that was good. I loved the cinematography and the blips, and the denouement. Also the acting, (although I know not  much about acting) and the plot and everything else.

I watched it because it was 99p, although after reading reviews I paid £2.99 so I can watch it again which is just as well, because I'll want to watch it again.
