Colossal

A very silly premise for a film, based on a very weak pun (a monster in your Seoul).

Despite that, it could have worked if the characters had a bit more depth and the script had developed a bit more intelligently.

the undoubtedly Great Briton

Maybe this isn't the place for it, but there are two films out at the moment about Churchill, with straplines about the Greatest Briton. But was he though? Or was he a dangerous racist who caused the genocide of 3 million Indians and was on a mission to "keep Britain white"? This is a genuine question, I am not sure about watching either of the films as I know very little about either side of the debate. What do our resident historians think? Answers maybe in a new thread if not appropriate here.

Three Billboards  Nothing much to add to what Citoyen said. Very good film.

Not much to add from here either - very much enjoyed it. I had less of an issue with the ABBA inclusion.

Been really looking forward to this as I'm a big fan of the writer/director's previous films (and for the ones his brother has made - at least one of which he worked on).
Thumbs up from me too. A thoroughly enjoyable film. Funny thing though - as we were discussing it, my wife mentioned a pet tortoise, and I missed that completely!

The foreigner

Not your usual Jackie Channel, limited kung-fu fu.

Simple, fine action movie. Very thinly veiled Gerry Adams character (you get the feeling Jackie Channel doesn't like Adams).

Dante's Peak. Volcano old school disasteroo. Brosnan proves it's still possible to outrun a volcanic eruption in a pickup truck. He's pretty handsome though.

The Sixth Day. Ye olde Arnie caper. Terrible, terrible acting yet somehow strangely alluring.

Bright, a made for Netflix thing with Will Smith.

Basic premise is modern day middle-earth, 2000 years after the run-in with you know who.

Will Smith did insist on being Will Smith but overall it was played reasonably straight and not a bad effort for those who like this sort of hokum. :)

I found Bright a bit meh. And wasn't there the same film with a human cop and an alien partner some years back ("YES!" screams Google, "and will people stop fucking asking me this.")

I thought the premise of Bright was decent, but they struggled to carry it through and it kinda just washed out. Lots of material, though and they have confirmed a sequel.

Meanwhile I'm now watching Guy Ritchies "King Arthur" and I can see why it flopped so badly. Action sequences are decent, but man, this thing is a mess.
It has absolutely no idea what it wants to be.

Having looked up diegetic and Basil Exposition, what he said and they said.

One of those films where the audience sits quietly through the end credits so as to avoid breaking the spell.

The Grey

Spoiler alert…. A wolf expert is involved in a plane crash in Alaska.  He decides that he and the six survivors should head away from the plane to escape from the man eating wolves who live in the area…in deep cold and heavy snow…. Like HOW STUPID IS THAT!!!!

Of course, one by one they die: horribly. The end.

Frankly, one of the worse films I have seen in ages. Firstly, if your plane crashes DO NOT LEAVE IT. It will provide cover, be easier to find than a person walking in the snow as it will have a beacon and is likely to contain food and water. Also, it is likely to be easier to defend against wolves than wondering around the local forest like a large tin of Winnalot.  I suppose having seven people being killed makes a better film than watching seven people sitting around waiting to be found……. But not by much.

One of my all-time favourites. Lost count of how many times I've seen it but it never loses its impact.

Also has the most stylish sex scene in any film ever.

Lindsay Anderson had wanted to film it at my alma mater...  Only seen it once - a great film but very much "of it's time".  :-\

Personal Shopper

I had high hopes for this film, given it received positive word of mouth.  Unfortunately it is rather mediocre, with Kirsten Stewart being a surly sort-of-paranormal who acts as personal shopper for a fashion model.  Kirsten may or may not be variously stalked, haunted, psychotic etc.  It's been done many times before and I doubt this is the last.

It did, however, lead to a general chat in my house about whether ectoplasm was real and lots of Googling to prove it one way or another.  We realised that a lot of the so-called pictures of ectoplasm looked like silk curtains being spewed from various orifices of 1920s psychics, which led to the conclusion that it would be good to have a pair of scissors in a ghost fight.

Zac and Miri Make a Porno -  because it was on the telly last night.

Mildly amusing premise but all the gags are obvious in the extreme as is the denouement.

The best bits are them trying to think up names for the sequels to the film they are filming.  Really its one idea stretched out into an entire film.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

http://halftheroad.com A film about female professional cycling. It belaboured the main point a bit much but it was interesting to see how far backwards female racing has gone since the '80s and '90s. Nicole Cooke chatting and answering questions afterwards was the main draw for me but it was an enjoyable time hiding from the sleet and rain.

The Post, Steven Spielberg's film about the publishing of the Pentagon Papers in 1971 by the NY Times and the Washington Post. As the title suggests, most of the film revolves around the role played by the Washington Post and Katherine Graham.

Lucy I remember having mixed feelings about this when I first saw it and for the first half, I couldn't figure out why...then the second half started and it became obvious.

I do like Scarlett, though.

Altho' in many ways it seemed as much about now than then.   An excellent film altho' I would also guess that an American would get more out of it than most Brits.
Katherine Graham's rapid learning curve was very well portrayed, I thought.
