Anyone likely to be driving near/past York?

Possibly, but need to sort domestics first prior to confirmation as daughter No 1 is coming over from HK.

Wetherby services at 8.30pm, according to Dr Google.

Pitching tent in the dark, get ready with the torches (again).

I just tried to call the campsite (they don't have the lightweight campers' rate on their website), but no answer. I'll try again later.

I doubt it'll be a problem anyway - but I'll call ahead and confirm, and ask you lot what time you're arriving and how etc. Later - no need to tell me now.

If anyone does have owt they want me to ask the site, let me know.

The YHA looks fully booked, but I'm on hold with them at the mo' on the offchance that someone needs a bailout option/additional creature comforts.

Contact!

Some info from the owners:

£20 per night for family-sized tents
£20 per night for campervans/caravans (same price whether leccy hookup is required or not)

£7 per night for lightweight campers

Parking and stuff is on the website.

They don't expect it'll be a problem fitting us all in, and a couple of people in small tents won't make any difference, but I'd like to call and get some space booked as soon as I can. I'll start bothering you all with PMs in the next day or two.

I think that's it! Bring your own food, or there's a pub in the village, or we can send bunbury shopping in Appleby. If anyone does want to arrange mass cooking, be my guest.

(No joy at the youth hostel, by the way - I think that's out of the question)

Simple solution - don't bring a mahoosive tent!

Wait, you've a campervan?!

There are a few B&Bs in Dufton, if anyone doesn't want to rough it. Eg:

Nope. Just a van. We'll work it out.

I think £20 /night is very steep for 1 person in a tiny campervan. Have just emailed them to see whether they would accept £10 / night, otherwise I may be in a small tent or parked in the carpark.

We have an awning for our campervan (The Awnopolis, as christened by Clare OTP) that sleeps 2 - I wonder if the camper + awning = £20 or £40/night? If £20, that's available to whoever would like it, otherwise we'll do without.

Presumably just a van counts as a car, and it's the tent you pay for.

It might be different if they're sleeping in it!

The website says there's free camping in the village, or £2 per night onsite. I'll call back once I have a clearer idea of how our motley crüe are accommodating themselves.

They have offered me a discount of £3 for single occupancy - probably will bring a tent with me

We're still possibles.   Small tent on the larger side of small.

I read the tariffs as £7 per pitch which includes one person for a small tent and a fiver for an extra person.   Is that your interpretation Deano?

I could just ring them of course.

mllePB will be investigating train options over the weekend.  If we join you we will cycle from Penrith.   Fully loaded I expect it to take about a week!   :o   :D

I'm sure someone could be convinced. Which bit of the Pennine Way are you eyeing up? (Up being the operative word...)

That there High Cup looks worth a look... on the map there's an obvious return route via Scordale.  And if you go a bit further, there's "Great Cocklanke" and "Cauldron Snout", which seem like suitable destinations for a YACF ride...

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CYCLE DOWN CAULDRON SNOUT!!  :o ;D

It's a tricky enough walk...

Cow Green-High Cup is the route I'll be coming, assuming I'm riding over (which is weather and time-dependent - I'm not sure I'd be up to riding straight into a howling westerly for 50 miles). ISTR it took about three hours from Cow Green to High Cup. It would probably have been easier with knobbly tyres, as there was a lot of trudging across peat bogs.

I think the track by Maize Beck is more like the above, with added rockiness, but it's a long time since I went that way. The photo is just above Birkdale. It'd be a full day out on the bike from Dufton - take sandwiches! Navigation is quite tricky going west-east, as there are fewer landmarks - there are trig points on the hills either side of High Cup, so it's fairly easy to follow, as long as the clouds don't roll in. I assume you'd be following a track, mind.

I'll probably be leading the hordes up to the radar station, anyway, but I'm happy enough to have different groups :)

Nah, it's not that bad. It's just a bit constantly up-and-down, whether you go north of the A66 or south of it, as you're crossing loads of little valleys.
