New desktop PC ideas needed
« on: 26 October, 2015, 09:30:55 am »
My current desktop needs replacing. Very little of it is original, having replaced power supply, motherboard, processor and drives over the 10(?) years since I bought it. It has become incredibly noisy and now the current monitor looks to be on the way out. The keyboard and mouse are also very old and crappy so I was thinking why not buy a bundled system and replace everything at once.

Are there any good deals out there at the moment? The hardest work it needs to do is video editing I guess but storage space is a priority, my current system has 3 internal and two external HDs.

TBH I'd buy a new monitor and just upgrade the mobo/processor/memory. You don't necessarily need a video card as the on-chip graphics are probably good enough. The noise is probably fan bearins on their way out, or fans spinning up due to a build up of dust or dried out thermal paste on your CPU. You will get a new stock cooler with your CPU with thermal paste pre-applied. Case fans are relatively cheap.

If you bought a new system, chances are you'd have to add disks and the display and peripherals would probably fairly crappy.

Keyboards and mice are relatively inexpensive.

I agree with all of that, keyboard and mouse are to PCs what wheels are to off the shelf bikes. It is where resellers save money so you end up with the cheapest, nastiest ones available. £50 gets you probably the best non-gaming set out the, the Logitech one (on the phone at the moment so can't link) I have one at work and they rock!

Scan build my workstations and they also have a good reputation for video crunching:

They do a lower-cost range as well:

Good company to deal with and utterly customisable.  And very good at being silent!

Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

Look for a desktop with usb3 ports if using external drives.  Video editing, well that will want memory.

I should think you'd be hard pressed to find a machine without USB 3.0 ports these days, albeit outnumbered at least 2:1 by USB 2.0 ones.

Just over two years later and I finally replaced it! Thanks Marcus, Scan are a great company, the personal attention during the ordering process was superb.
