Use this as an opportunity to convert to belt drive?

if the same frame has broken 3 times (in the same place?) then I don't hold much trust in their frame builder.

Different place each time.  Chesterfield, St.Albans and Morrisons car park.
Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

Well it was welded back together, but today the repair has also cracked. End of frame :(

It's a shame, I liked that bike. I'm guessing it probably wasn't built to cope with someone my size :-[

My guess it was originally a fatigue crack.

Was the repair done by brazing with brass or was it welded? Maybe the joint wasn't cleaned properly or wasn't a good fit.

I think it would have been better to replace the dropout.

Why not have it repaired if you like it that much. A new dropout, and a new o/s chain stay , should cost you not much more than your taxi home.

a dropout replacement would be a decently reliable repair - but maybe not *that* cheap

That's the problem really. I've just bought a younger version of the same frame for £60. A new set of drop outs would be about twice that according to the sites I found online.

Hopefully this should be a straight frame swap. :)
