The Rio Paralympics

In deep financial doodoo after poor ticket sales and the Olympics taking funds from them.

After the sell out of London 2012,this could be a horrible step backwards.
It is simpler than it looks.

This is really disappointing news.  If they needed to scale back, they should have scaled back slightly from both the Olympics and Paralympics. I really enjoy the Paralympics - some of sporting efforts are at least as impressive as in the Olympics.  Some, perhaps even more so.

More tickets sold in the last week

In other news Finland choose to use the host volunteers colours.

And the president of the IPC is continually shown surrounded by empty seats.  ::-)

Really weird to think four years ago I was watching this event live. With added YACFrs in the stadium.

I watched the opening ceremony last night and loved it - I also thoroughly enjoyed Clare Balding's search for the Lexi voiceover. Stephen Hawking was hilarious!

There's something that makes me feel a little uneasy about (for example) seeing Sarah Storey winning the IP by catching her opponent after 5 laps.  It's hardly hard-fought-for if you're that much better than the opposition.

It's probably hard to get to be that much better.

Indeed, and I'd do nothing to belittle the fantastic achievement of being as good as she is - compared with able-bodied athletes, she is amongst the very best.  I can't help but think that she'd rather be measured against the best in the world than the necessarily-small catchpool of Paralympic athletes.  It's a bit like the difference between winning a club TT and being National champion.

There is a significant group/campaign which would like paralympics to be properly part of the Olympics. The classification system for Paralympians "by impairment" is extremely controversial, even without bring body essentialist arguments and disability politics into it... ;)

The likes of Sarah Storey do compete regularly with able bodied athletes.  There aren't a lot of competitions outside of the Paralympics for disabled athletes - there have been comments that some of the athletes have only done 2 competitions so far this year.  I've been to races where Sarah Storey is competing against able-bodied athletes, and yes, she frequently wins.

Sad news from Rio

Iranian team has stated that their paralympic cyclists has died as a result of a crash during the Road race.

Believed to have crashed on a descent and broken his neck.

RIP sir.

From what I am hearing on the radio yes, however the number of circuits may be different.

Apparently there was no TV coverage of the race which means no one really knows what happened.
