Transporter 200, 5 November

Anyone doing this?

Did it a few years ago and it was a fine ride through some very pretty country. Fireworks on the way back down through the valleys into Cardiff.

And not a bad night to be in Cardiff if Wales win the rugby.

The café in deffynog is the only place I have ever had grapes in my beans on toast. The extra calories came in handy on the Devils Elbow ;D

Last time I did it the hail was ripping my skin off on the descent from the Elbow.  I'm entered again. Is the Transporter bridge still closed?

I'm in, haven't missed it since I started audaxing. Should be quiet this year as bonfire night is almost a week later.

I've got a cold. Thick green nosejelly. Going to give it a go but won't be making an effort.

More of a cough than a cold. But it looks like a cracking day to be out on the bike so I shall be enjoying *every minute*.

Lots of thanks to the organizers. This was a really lovely ride: nice Usk lanes etc, as in a few routes; and the Brecon Beacons after the Devil's Elbow were superb. Autumns colours in trees and bracken. Weather helped, as did plenty of nice places to stop. And a final 20 miles or so of downhill, more or less; flattering to the legs. Sandwiches at end much appreciated.

A good day out, although I am sure the route up Devils Elbow was steeper than last time.

Shame you couldn't join us Flatus, it was a great day to be out riding in the Beacons.
Garmin read 17C at one point which wasn't far off the truth.

I'd agree with Charlie Boy, Devils Elbow is defo steeper (and longer) than in previous years.

Anyone in this year? The closing date is generous and so I'm tempted. Forecast is good but hardly reliable at this distance.

Tempted too. One of my abiding impressions of this ride is the trees in their autumn colours; they should look fabulous this year.

I am interested in riding the 2018 version of this event in 2018 but just want to check whether anyone knows if the Transporter bridge is operational at the moment? - that would be the main reason for trekking down to Cardiff rather than riding an event more local to me in November.

http://www.newport.gov.uk/heritage/Transporter-Bridge/Visit.aspx suggests that it is.

Richard has scheduled special opening in previous editions of this ride.  Worth pinging him a message to make sure...

I know Bristol CTC had a trip there the other week but I've done the ride a couple of times and the route went past the Newport side but didn't utilise it, crossing at a bridge further north. A great ride, particularly the Brecon Beacons section.

I seem to remember the helicopter shots from Sunday’s Tour of Britain stage finish showing it in use, but that may only have been for the cameras.
