Bring 'em along. We could give them some old breve cards to sort or something  ;)
Why should anybody steal a watch when they can steal a bicycle?

The Junior Tippers are top notch AUK helpers and Secret Control operatives so I think they should come along!

Cycled to the tea shop in Terling today and popped into the Rayleigh Arms on the pretext of checking on the menus.......what a soulless place, not at all cosy. I wonder how long it will last this time.

Its better than it was.  We popped in last weekend and got a very warm welcome.  Lord Rayleigh now owns the building and has leased it to a local couple who have done it up.  They still have some finishing touches to do but we didn't think it was too bad.  I hope it does survive as Terling needs a pub.  I suppose as Terling hasn't had one for so long locals have got into the habit of going elsewhere, after all there's plenty of choice.  I think the principle of "use it or lose it (again)" needs to apply.

Having chatted to the owner myself I think they are looking for a gastro pub operation as where the pub failed previously was running as a 'traditional' local boozer...... then a Thai restaurant!!!
Sadly no pub these days can survive on wet Sales alone.
I have to say the food is very nice but it does slightly lack a good drinking only area which is a bit of a shame

Some can, e.g. The Oddie and Victoria in Colchester.  But it is increasingly rare.  I think it depends on the owner's cost base.  If they have high rents or mortgage payments to meet then they probably need revenue from food.

True I guess to an extent The Cats - Woodham Walter falls into that bracket too!
What I should have said is a pub/building of that size needs to have a gastro offer. As it stands with the Monkey they haven't got the whole building open. I believe the intention is to move the village shop to the big space at the back of the pub to as such create a 'village hub' with pub, shop, tearoom and surgery all together

A village hub would be a terrific idea!

Yes, The Cats is another wet trade only pub although I was told once that Wally does a ploughman's on something like Wednesday and Thursday lunchtimes  ::-)   ;D

You're doing this to wind me up aren't you  >:(

A visit to the Oddie is already in hand.  We should have been to the D&B already but you lot did your own thing.  And next week isn't The Hurdlemakers.

Please could you refer to your FORWARD PLANNING documents  >:(

Hey, why don't we go to a pub in Witham the week after ?  Just a suggestion, don't know where the idea even came from.

Just thinking, how about the Totham Compasses on the 1st of Feb ?  You could wear your party frock.
