Googled that, as I was intrigued.

Never heard of the book - which is the first time on this thread.

I also Googled it, merely to confirm my suspicion that it was Carter Beats The Devil, you understand.

It isn't.

I've read this in the not too distant past... it's either Jonathan Lethem or Michael Chabon. Can't remember which without actually looking at the books. Sounds more like Chabon, so I would guess it's Kavalier and Clay, but I can't be 100% sure.

Somebody better check for me because I don't want to cheat!

I'm pretty sure it's Slaughterhouse Five. (so Kathy's turn unless someone challenges this - I don't have a copy to check)

“It was the afternoon of my eighty-first birthday, and I was in bed with my catamite when Ali announced that the archbishop had come to see me.”

I don't think anyone's answered, this - it's Earthly Powers by Anthony Burgess.  Not one you're likely to forget.

I thought you'd buggered off.

Never mind, I don't think anyone will be worried about having a choice.

Well it sure don't look like Kansas The Wizard of Oz.
