I thought we should have a dedicated Marmite thread, to discuss all things Marmite and to showcase photos of the beloved thread in exotic or ordinary locations.
-
The first Question though, do you love Marmite or hate Marmite. Or is this just a myth and you actually just feel ambivalent towards the lovely stuff?
I thought we had a poll option, but I can’t find it so no worries.
-
I don't love or hate it, just like.
-
I love it but it plays havoc with colitis/crohns
-
I don't eat it as marmite if I can help it - I can eat it (unlike peanut butter which is evil and inedible) but I wouldn't choose to eat it.
I do like twiglets though.
My dad likes marmite so much he has it with marmalade on his toast "marmalite"
-
What a great idea B. Will give that one a try.

I believe some denizens of uk.rec.sheds were marmalite likers.
I don't care for Marmite but don't really hate it.

Foul stuff. It's made from oil that's done twenty thousand miles in the sump of a minicab.

By a wierd coincidence (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=46587.msg2389121#msg2389121)...

Marmite is best deployed onto the windscreens and side windows of cars belonging to motorists who have systematically and repeatedly chosen to ignore The Highway Code.
Vegemite, on the other hand, is the food of kings.

Door handles really leaves 'em guessing.
WRT Marmite I can take it or leave it. When we have a jar, which is increasingly rare, it lasts for years.
I voted meh! but I would have preferred it without the exclamation mark.
-
Having been hit directly in the eye by a snowball thrown by one of my colleagues whilst I was employed by the AA as a Relay driver, I chose to smear the door handles, steering wheel and handbrake lever of his crewed vehicle with jam.
I took time afterwards to point out to him that it could've so easily been dog shit and not jam.
-
I really like it and wiill eat it occasionally with a spoon. In fact I had Marmite on crumpets for lunch today in fact. It also makes a nice drink if added to hot water. I have a jar of Vegemite too, as I really like that as well, but if I had to choose between them I'd go for Marmite
-
Should only ever be used for kitchen pr0n purposes.

I love it, but squeezy Marmite is an abomination.
Anyone else think it's stealthily got more expensive recently? Is it a side-effect of the brexit thing, or maybe Marmite is supplanting Mars Bars as an indicator of the state of the economy?

I don't hate Marmite, I just don't like the taste. It's just the sort of salty gloop that I don't love nearly enough to swallow.

This Marmite is small. That Marmite is far away.

Marmalite sounds like a generic name for the not quite Marmite things, such as Vegemite and various own label yeast extracts. Either that or a deadly weapon.

UXB alert, experts are steaming out 250 kg of Marmalite.

The stuff in Ye Shedde was Creomite. An unholy blend of Creosote and Marmite.
Creomite is a dark brown gooey (not Gooey) substance which can either be spread thinly on wood to preserve it, or spread thinly on bread and butter as preserve.

Thanks, I hadn't seen that! It seems, anecdotally anyway, that Tesco caved in but Aldi didn't - their Marmite is still for sale at the old price. Other explanations for this are available of course.

Huh. I thought I was the only one...

I am a love it kinda guy.
Marmite sandwiches, Marmite on toast, Marmite on crumpets, Marmite as a beverage, Marmite rice cakes, Marmite crisps, Mamrmite mini Ryvita, Marmite under peanut butter in a sandwich or on toast, Marmite as a seasoning in gravy ect ect.
Yup. I like Marmite.

POTD, week, month.
;D ;D ;D

I’m ambivalent, and will have it a few times a year. There’s almost a jar a week in the shopping for Mrs Dan though.
-
When I was tiny, my Mum fed me on Weetabix, hot milk and Marmite. It must have been her Crool Nurse training wot dun it.

Is that to the east of Uzbekistan?

In case anyone has missed the information, Marmite XO is available again in Mr Tesco's Emporium! Got 2 jars today, already had 2 Marmite XO sandwiches! (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190715/ba667962d5ea16a6a69f7061a9507071.jpg)

Does that marmite taste strong as I used to remember?

Does that marmite taste strong as I used to remember?
Yes, but it is a lot smoother than the regular variety. (In my opinion anyway! )
-
Has the marmite taste changed or is it me?
-
I have always found that the taste and consistancy of Marmite has variation.
I suspect this is driven by the source of their raw materials.
-
I have been trying Mr Morrison’s ersatz Marmite.
It reminds me of the Marmite XO pictured previously, being darker and stronger in flavour than normal Marmite. It is also rather cheaper.
I have instructed Mrs F (who is in charge of placing our weekly order with Mr Morrison) to make this my usual yeast extract.
-
Rules for marmite on toast...
Well toasted, white bread.
Butter immediately after toasting.
No dipping butter knife into marmite.
Thinly apply marmite, while toast still warm.
Enjoy asap.
Anything else? ;)
-
Anything else? Yes. Yes, there is.
• Throw the by now inedible toast in the bin* and redo from scratch with marmalade, jam or HUNNY :demon:
* unless – and this wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest – it turns out to be poisonous to pigeons
-
Am I imagining this, or was there once a TV ad for the stuff that said something like, "Spread it nice and thin, you'll be amazed how quickly you'll acquire the taste for it."
Yes folks, it's that good.
-
Spread it nice and thin
The brother of an old girlfriend didn't so much have Marmite on his toast as have toast on his Marmite. Unless he kicked that habit, I dread to think what his blood pressure is like now.
Twiglets!
"Twiglets’re snacks that adults think kids like but they taste of burnt matches dipped in Marmite."
- David Mitchell, Black Swan Green

Twiglets are strange, they don't taste particularly nice, but if there's a nearby bowl of them at a party they exert a curious magnetic attraction, and you'll find yourself stuffing them your mouth while thinking these don't taste that good. Then you'll eat some more. You don't know why, but you will. It's a strange compulsion. It's not even just me, I've seen other people doing it. You can see the look the look on their face. Why am I chewing a mouthful of dry twigs? Then they reach down for more. You want to get rid of radioactive waste? Paint it on Twiglets, host a party.
I don't care enough about Marmite to love it or hate it. It's vaguely salty and mostly pointless. If anyone tells you it's full of vitamins, well, yeah, they would. Make sure you love them first.
-
Mrs B returned from the shops with Marmite Truffle flavour. I doubt that it has real Truffle in it.
Umm, bit different. Not great.
I like Marmite to taste of Marmite.
-

I find Stilton cheese is similar. I can't say that it has a pleasant flavour, but it's a really interesting one. I normally only buy it at Christmas, and it doesn't last long.
-
If you've ever had the experience where the marmite is just a little too sticky and your toast surface starts to break up while spreading - I can confirm that Tesco Yeast Extract version is a lot 'easier' to spread, much less viscous - and taste seems the same...
Should IGMC? ;)
-
The Lidl and Aldi versions are also easier to spread.
