A couple of times a week, as I cycle through the next village, I see a van go past, from the local baker, Prudens.

I instantly switch to thinking of Dear Prudence - http://www.youtube.com/v/hh_x8uBUbkc&rel=1.

A remarkably contrasting couple of days of earworms, gradually getting worse:

btw, can anyone identify the guy who introduces them at the start? Seems familiar.

I think it's the actor who was in many of the "Comic Strip Presents...". Here he is in a dickie bow with Dick and co (which contains its own delightful ear worm from 1:04 onwards).

The other day, I had an earworm so awful I wouldn't even tell Butterfly what it was, in case she got infected.

This afternoon, I got 'American Girl', by Tom Petty (i think). No idea why.

Whilst pottering around in the kitchen on Sunday I was afflicted by "Millenium" by Robbie Williams.

Took me ages to work out it was because we had watched a James Bond film the night before, from which title song the strings bit of that song was ripped off lifted.

I had Maroon 5's Payphone (Parental Advisory Mix) doing the loop on the way to work this morning.

What is it with schmaltzy music today? On the way home, approaching Croydon, I got Sammy Davis Jr with Candy Man. :o

Worse, my mind started to play tune association, but not enough. So now I had Sammy duetting with Christina Aguillera, mixing her song Candy Man with his. Weird mash up.

For the real "Candy Man", you need either Rev. Gary Davis or Mississippi John Hurt.

Earlier this week, I had a mash up in my head of Night Games by Graham Bonnet (which I've not heard for ages, then twice in a week), and Wanted by The Dooleys. Try it - it works, but it's like having a drunk angry hornet in your head.

Doesn't anyone do what I do with annoying earworms?

Sing the first line, then a different second line. Repeat it a couple of times and the next time the earworm comes round, it doesn't know which way to go! ;D

Is the term "earworm" a recent arrival?

I was chatting to a German girl earlier this year and she used the term. I was puzzled, and she explained it. I assumed it was a literal translation of a German idiom. But then I started noticing it in use. So ... has the term been around for ages and I just managed to ignore it. Or did my German friend infect the national consciousness with it when she visited?

I first heard the term five or six years ago (on British radio).

My latest earworm is Feed the Tree by Belly. I'm actually enjoying it.

I heard that song on the radio last week. It's a good 'un.

AIUI 'Earworm' is originally a German expression.
