It's been around at least for a decade or so in German:

Thanks for the etymology.  I've just managed to ignore it for the past few years.

Mine today was the Shangri La's song "walking in the sand ... remember" oddly it came to me in a dream while dozing in front of the telly.

Is the term "earworm" a recent arrival?

I first encountered it in a Desmond Bagley novel in 1979, though he did say it was a German phrase.

The bloke in the post room was listening to classic fm when I went over earlier.

Now I've got a few bars of Mozart's Concerto for Flute and Harp going round and round and round and round.

My ride to work this morning was accomplished with the aid of various repeated snippets of Stereophonics 'Dakota'

In the morning I awake
My arms, my legs, my body aches
The sky outside is wet and grey
So begins another weary daa-aa-ay
(So)So begins another weary day

It's certainly appropriate for how I feel. :(

For some reason known only to my subconscious, my head has suddenly filled with the dulcet tones of Ian Anderson singing Cup of Wonder.

Ooh, good one, had forgotten that song.

I currently have Grendel as an earworm, fortunately not all 17 odd minutes of it.

This week has been mostly Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne.

But this morning, perhaps due to the slight change of pace and effort, it was, embarrassingly, ROCK in the USA by John Cougar Mellencamp. :-[

They do catch you by surprise, these things.

Can't shift the most excellent GMF by John Grant from worming around my brain - it's been there for over a week now & I don't mind one bit...particularly as the chorus is a bit sweary and can be internally 'sung' with much vehemence!

Earworms of new records aren't bad because you like to repeatedly enjoy new great things.  The worst earworms for me are old things that I've heard quite enough of already.  I'm not going to name any right now because just thinking of any will set them off again.
