Sureflap microchip catflap
« on: 16 February, 2014, 09:27:50 am »
Anybody using one?? We're getting vistors eating Max's food, and spraying occasionally. I'd forgotton that he was chipped when we got him (and the code is OK), so hopefully we can solve the problem without the usual collar issues.

Not sure of the brand but we've used one of these for some time and have no problems.
(The people we bought ours from have gone bust, but they may have been just a retail outlet, not the manufacturer)

We have a 'PetPorte' one in our back door. It works OK, although the 'porch' that sticks out (and houses the sensor coil) gets in the way sometimes.
If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is...

PetPorte -- that sounds familiar. That's the one we've got.

Yes. Lovely bit of kit. No problems with visitors. Excellent battery life too.

It arrived today, looks like good stuff.

I'll check that that his chip is still working as soon as the ghastly smell of whatever he's been rolling around in dies down a bit .  It's a very unusual smell.....

Ah, the smell was a wound.   :(  Now cleaned out and antibiotic - jabbed, much better  :)

The cat flap works well, so no more visitors - although if Max gets "bigger", it'll be bit of a squeeze.

Ours died after about four years. Or rather it developed a degree of independence on whether to allow our cats in. I can't blame it for showing some discretion, they're a horrible pair. It was getting pretty worn so we bought a new one. Quite happy with them, we were hosting a daily (and nightly) all-you-can-eat buffet and luxury free hotel for the local cats beforehand. Plenty of fun to be had watching bemused cats outside the catflap until they figured out that the buffet and hotel facilities were no longer available.

Cats can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps so he should be fine unless he gets really fat.

Ba'al and Belphagor have the Petporte one which works surprisingly well.  It has long been my intention to hack the innards to include a contrivance which tweets an update every time one of them comes or goes:

Cats don't tweet (unless they've just eaten a budgie).

Our Wes could fit through the PetPorte at his largest which was over 10kg. It was a bit of a struggle, but incentives like someone using a vacuum cleaner, helped.
He's now down to about 8.3kg which, for a Maine Coon is overweight but not stupidly so for a 14 year old neutered tom.
