Do Campag make frames?
« on: 08 April, 2010, 09:47:15 pm »
Mrs eck and I were on our way (by car) to visit Mr & Mrs elgin_al yesterday evening when we passed a guy riding a silver / gray coloured bike with a large "Campagnolo" decal on the down tube. I was very tempted to stop and enquire as to the provenance of the bike but, well...

Campag don't do frames do they? Do you think he'd just managed to get some transfers from somewhere?
It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

I've got a big sheet of Campag. transfers, various, somewhere. Bike shops used to give them away with Campag. gear.

I dunno, but I think I can remember Campagnolo frame building jigs featured in the Whiskers price list about 15 years ago.
I expect that almost all frames are made in Asia now, except for some steelies.

They made front and rear dropouts years ago, back when Reynolds 531 and Columbus SL were the proper materials for a bicycle frame.

Italy is still a major frame producer in all materials including carbon.

The Campagnolo tool kits included one for frame builders - very, very desirable. Campagnolo have never made frames though.

But they almost all start off in the Far East, returning to Italy for spraying.

Some companies do put together carbon frames in various ways from carbon tubes, again from the Far East

Aye, that's what I thought, and why I asked the question. I knew they made dropouts but I was intrigued to see a frame that was ostensibly a "Campagnolo" frame. He must have got hold of some transfers, as mentioned by Bouthrey Bridge.
Bloody poser.  ;D

I may be mistaken - but I think Wobbly John of this forum has a blue racing style bike with a Campagnolo logo on the frame?

Actually I've got a couple of Campagnolo transfers myself - they came with a 1989 Raleigh Team replica frame. They are intended for use on the chainstays I believe, so that you could have your bike look like the ones the pro's rode, which had the component manufacturer displayed as advertising I guess.

I used mine to cover scratches in the paint.

You are not mistaken. The frame came like that, second hand. I think they are just sticky logos and have been added. I'm pretty sure that I added one of the chainstay ones as I've had some with components that I've bought.
If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is...

There was a while in the late 80s/early 90s when 'Shimano SIS' logos would be much more prominent on the average ATB than the brand name of the bike.
Getting there...

The seat stays on Cavendish's bike are totally covered in equipment sponsors' logos.

Undoubtedly most of the worlds bike frames are made in China and Taiwan despite what the label may say, I was meaning the more desirable marques. Some do have frames made to their design and specification outside of Europe but most of the top Italian makers still build  their frames in Italy which is also where Merckx carbon frames are made before being sent to Belgium for finishing. There is definitely a carbon frame building plant in Italy I was looking at their website a few years back when I also found a site which listed where most makers frames were made but can't find it now but I did find this one which seems more recent  Where was my bike made? - allanti.com

Yes, rather interesting article, but hopelessly out of date after only a couple of years. Sad to see so many great names reduced to "brands" though.

Don't know about the others, but Dawes frames are not made in Tyseley (B'ham).
The bikes are still "built" there but the frames are actually made abroad.

That might depend upon the age of the Dawes.

You know our Clarion, nothing younger than himself...   ;D

Good grief, you're right!:  5/6 are Southern.  Perhaps I need more Yorkshire bikes.  Where are the numbers for Ellis Briggs, Bob Jackson & Whittaker & Mapplebeck? ;)

I don't know any Essex bikebuilders, but I quite fancy a Witcomb.

You'll be needing a Roberts, an Argos and a Yates to spread it round a bit more too.   ;)
