TimC: Shimano is not the only manufacturer. Campagnolo makes road triples (52/39/30, & you can change those rings), with rear sprockets up to 30 teeth. SRAM makes wide range cassettes & road doubles, enabling a wide gear range.

Maybe so, but TREJ has stated his intention to fit 105. I was giving advice relevant to that.

Update - specialised had run out of secteurs but managed to source one from Germany.   I am getting the bike built up foc under warranty with my existing parts.   They are also fitting a deore rear mech with a bigger cassette to suit the riding I want to do next year.    This then gives me the option of buying a faster road bike when I can afford it and use this one for audax and lightweight touring.   Should get it back Friday - so pretty good service and outcome really.   Still fancy a genesis but that might have to wait until finances improve!
