The Informant.

On the plus side, it looks great - a very well made movie. And Matt Damon is excellent in the lead role.

However, I agree with a review I read that says it seems caught between two camps - can't make up its mind if it's a comedy or a thriller. And though I'm not familiar with the story, I found most of the plot twists were predictable due to being telegraphed in advance.

It reminded me in some respects of Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind, and in other respects of Quiz Show - two brilliant but very different films. And that perhaps illustrates why it seemed to lack a definitive style. Not nearly as good as either of those films, though.

Still pretty good on the whole, though. Worth watching.

Never seen it before, wished I hadn't bothered

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Mrs B's choice, as usual. We both liked it, but Mrs B found some of the violence a little shocking, mostly because of its realism. She appreciated the realism, though.

Tried to follow the Swedish, but with very limited success.

All the way through I was thinking that Swedish sounds like garbled English, in the same way that Dutch does - it almost sounds like English, but not quite.  :)

Welll . . . I did learn a bit of Swedish (mostly via Danish), many years ago, so I know some of the things which can't be guessed easily, e.g. that 'et' or 'en' stuck on the end of a word is the definite article, or that god = good & gud (pronounced good, more or less) = god. Still, I couldn't have followed most of it without the subtitles.

When I went to work in the Netherlands, never having studied the language, I felt as you describe, that it sounded like garbled English. Sometimes snatches would be intelligible, but then it'd lapse into gibberish.

The original Swedish Wallander is on BBC 4 on Saturday nights, BTW. Series 2, 21.15. Repeated Thursday 22.00. I prefer it to the English version.

Swedish and Norwegian are tonal languages, where the "singing" is part of the meaning, but Danish isn't. I can read Danish (which isn't a language, but a disease of the throat), but when I try and speak it I get accused of being Norwegian. The vowel sounds in Swedish, at least around Bohuslan, bizarrely remind me of North Welsh...

Howl's Moving Castle

Not as good as Spirited Away. Too long and the story seems a bit incoherent. Beautiful drawing though.

Would like to see it with Japanese voices - Miyazaki's films usually seem to work better with Japanese voices and subtitles.

We watched that too. Perfect lazy, rainy afternoon family viewing. Our fireplace is now known as "Calcifer".

I agree, such a shame considering how enjoyable the previous one was.

Yes they do. Sometimes they even change the songs for the English versions too... and I agree on Howl's Moving Castle.

Just been through a veritable smorgasbord of films over the Easter week-end.

New Moon - I'm Team Jacob.
Shaun of the Dead - enjoyable as usual
Inkheart - OKish
An Education - very good

I was going to start watching the Hurt Locker but GeraldC has put me off so I'm going to put on Charlie Wilson's war instead.  :)

Ghost Town.

Better than I expected - a decent quota of belly laughs. Gervais is not plausible as a romantic lead though.

Terminator: Salvation.

Not bad. It's just an action movie, but a lot better than the turkey that was the third movie.

2001: A Space Odyssey at the Prince Charles, Leicester Square. Stunning and waaaay ahead of its time. Definitely one for the cinema rather than telly.

28 Weeks Later - great plot, great zombies  and a cliffhanger at the end...  ???

It was quite sad though... lots of people died, but then again, it's a zombie horror movie - what can we expect?
