Death of an old machine
« on: 28 May, 2008, 02:36:58 pm »
Well, its time has come.

My oldest Dell Latitude laptop is 8 years old.  I just broke its screen for the second time, the battery is dead, the CD drive falls out when you move it cos the case is cracked - none of that really mattered: it had Xubuntu on it and it was the ifrst machine I got Ubuntu & wireless to work on, using a Belkin PCMCIA card.  I used it for internet radio in the garage so the screen damage didn't matter.  But the power supply just went. I guess that's it :(

You may mock ;) but I've nursed that machine from sickly Windows ill-health to robust Ubuntu strength.  It's like getting rid of an old bike.

I've got one of those. Mine's a Compaq LTE-5400 with a scorching Pentium 150 mHz processor, 32mB of memory and a 6Gb hard drive ( and cost about £1800 new.)

It now dual boots Win-95 and RedHat 6 and starts Windows faster than any of my other computers  ::-)
