I have it running with Gmail and I've used it with others in the past (not Outlook though). I seem to recall it was straightforward enough, and Gmail and Thunderbird FAQs cover it well.
What specifically is the difficulty?

I use it with Gmail using POP3 and SMTP
I recall having real difficulties trying to set it up manually using the instructions from Google, but when I set up a new account in T-Bird it seemed to sort out all the settings itself and just worked.
