Acquiring Network Address
« on: 31 May, 2008, 08:48:13 am »
I'm at a friend's house and am trying to use their router. I've got the password key thingy, so my computer seems to be talking to the router, but the computer says 'Acquiring Network Address' and now says 'Windows could not connnect to the 'SKY46510' network. ...'. I've tried clicking the repair button, but it's not improved with that either.

Anyone got any ideas?  :-\

Is the router setup with access cotrol so only a recongnised list of mac addresses can connect?

Is your pc setup to get address via dhcp? (obtain an IP adddress automatically)

What happens if you connect by cable?

Erm, gotta find a cable.

The PC usually finds a network without any problems. I don't know about the router though. How would I find that out?

Turn the router off, wait thirty seconds, and turn it on.  Then try again.

As well as the possibility of being MAC locked, the router may not be set up to be a DHCP server - it may not hand out addresses automatically.  Can you get into the router's setup page using your friend's pc?  you can usually access a web-config page, using an address such as
Code: [Select]
http://192.168.0.1 (insert the router's actual address, of course).

Unless the router has been changed (and Sky don't encourage that) it'll have DHCP turned on and MAC filtering turned off, so they shouldn't be a problem.

The Network key you are using is the one printed on the bottom of the Sky router?   And SKY46510 is the SSID that is printed there too?
