One of the strongest chess tournaments of the year begins tomorrow in the Netherlands.

Games can be viewed on line, free. It's a 14-player all-play-all and concludes on 25th Jan. Sadly, there are no British players taking part this year.

A disastrous afternoon for Carlsen today, losing Wojtasek in 52 moves, although I think the World Champion perhaps should have resigned on move 29, when he lost a bishop, blocking all its escape squares with his own pieces. I've not seen any GM commentary on this yet, but it appears to me that he didn't get anything at all out of it and it just looked like a blunder. The computer assessment of the game has White as "much better" at move 16 and "winning" from 29 onwards.

For the (allegedly) Best Player Ever, he seems remarkably accident-prone. I certainly cannot remember Kasparov ever capitulating so meekly to anyone.
