Saris Solo rack - opinions please
« on: 04 June, 2018, 12:34:54 pm »
I have a rather madcap plan to drive my Mazda MX5 across Europe to Denmark.
Asking on an MX5 forum (MX5 Nutz) Saris Bones racks are recommended, or it seems possible just to take the wheels off and put the bike frame on the passenger seat.

The Saris Solo rack is 40 quid in Halfords https://www.saris.com/product/solo
This is what I will pay for occasional use, and also I have limited storage space in a London flat.
The Solo has bad reviews - said to mark the paintwork and to shift around a lot. Does anyone have direct experience of this rack please?

I occasionally sold them. They have a limited range of vehicles that it fits on, and I wouldn't trust it with a heavy bike. Thule & Yakima racks tend to be sturdier. All boot mounted racks which have parts sitting on paintwork will damage it eventually. Making sure that the paintwork and rack are clean, and removing it wherever not in use will help. If Saris claim it fits your vehicle, it shouldn't shift around if correctly fitted. If it is used on something they don't explicitly claim is compatible, all bets are off.
