Blimey, the editing of those highlights was shoddy. The slicing up of the anthems was really offensive to the ear, but more importantly there was no continuity about the editing of the play.

A very good performance by Wales though, albeit against the probable wooden spoonists.

The Welsh did very well yesterday, and the French look like emulating them today. The England pack is dire, though the French are also playing very well.

A great win by the English over France, with a wonderful line-out take and pass out of the tackle for a great try.

Oh.

I thought the French thoroughly deserved the win. They outplayed the England pack in just about every aspect of the game, even to the extent of closing down the England resurgence in the middle of the second half.

It was clear from that game that you shouldn't give the new French captain that much space to work in.

Am I alone in thinking it rather unwise of Eddie Jones to continually shoot his mouth off before key games? His comments before the French match reminded me rather of Tony Grieg’s promise to make the West indies “grovel”, whereupon the best team in the world beat England 3 - 0 in the series.

I was going to mention that as an upside.  However there are those who's budget won't stretch to that,  let alone the cost of an extra night's accommodation.  Not everyone who has gone from Llandysul is particularly well off.

Blimey - just watched England, that was a stressful hour-or-so! At about 50mins, when Eng kept kicking the ball away, I felt the Scots were going to edge it, they just seemed to have all the momentum. And then Hogg almost repeats his grounding error - but at the other end  :o From then on, England seemed to moving the right way. Just.

I'm a bit baffled by the betting on these champs. Pre-tournament odds made sense. arguably:
England: 10-11 (15-8)
Ireland: 4-1 (9-1)
Wales: 6-1 (14-1)
France: 7-1 (18-1)
Scotland: 33-1 (100-1)
Italy: 1,000-1 (2,000-1)

But after England (and Scotland) lost, it went a bit mad:
England !
France !
Ireland
Wales
Sco
Italy
(can't find the exact numbers right now)

Now the odds seem more sane. Apart from the odds on a Welsh Grand Slam:
England 10/11 (Grand Slam winners 6/4)
Ireland 7/2 (Grand Slam winners 8/1)
Wales 5/1 (Grand Slam winners 12/1)
France 11/2 (Grand Slam winners 14/1)
Scotland 25/1 (Grand Slam winners 66/1)
Italy 1000/1 (Grand Slam winners 1000/1)
No Grand Slam winner 1/1.

Still, it's a fascinating year. Even Wales aren't out of the running.

Am I wrong here?   Italy were in possession when the clock was in the red.  A try would have been their fourth,  so they would have had a bonus point.  If the try had been converted,  itwould have given them a losing point as well.
Ok. Bit of a long shot, but why did they kick it out?

Far from the first time that 6Nations players have done similar. I put it mainly down to 2 things:
A) they're quite tired, and
B) they haven't grown-up playing to Bonus Point rules, so it's not part of their mental rugby wiring. [see also - high tackles]
C) but mainly (A)

Yes, I had my doubts. I suppose it makes up for the penalty-try-that-wasn't. It reminded me of an incident right at the end of a Wales - England match a few years back, a close-fought game decided by a try from Scott Williams after he ripped the ball from Courtney Lawes' grasp. That was right at the death and there was no camera angle that definitely showed the ball being grounded. I thought Wales were a bit fortunate to have that try allowed today.

There was a French try disallowed for a forward pass a while before the player crossed the line. I saw guys complaining about that decision online, but as soon as I saw that pass I called it as forward.

There was also a Scots try disallowed or a forward pass. I didn't think that was quite so clear-cut, but it's all down to camera angles I suppose.

I didn't watch any. It's a long time since I watched live rugby. I try to find the highlights and the first batch I found didn't include that "was-it-wasn't-it a penalty try" incident.

Not sure it merited a penalty try, in spite of the protestations of the squeaky Welshovik in the colemantary box, but players have been sin-binned for less blatant deliberate knocks-on than that.

This is the reason the video ref cannot make a call on forwards passes in rugby league

Indeed. And 10 minutes with France down to 14 men might have cancelled the difference in points at the end.

I notice that the Welsh coach also had a big moan about France's final penalty. But that's the thing about close games - there are endless talking points about what might have been.

I think all of this justifies my decision that I took a few years ago, ie not to watch live rugby games any more. A game like that does nothing good for my blood pressure and leaves me emotionally exhausted for the rest of the day.

I think tempers have always tended to fray in big matches. Is it getting any nastier? I'm not sure that it is. I can think of a few players from over the years with a reputation for foul play. One that I have my doubts about in the current batch is Stuart Hogg. He was infamously yellow- and red-carded for the same off-the-ball incident, flattening Dan Biggar, a few years back, and I've noticed a couple of times since that he seems to go in unnecessarily with a risk of hurting his opponent. I'm thinking of him defending against a try in another match and there was no way he could stop the player scoring, but he did leap on him aggressively a second or so after the ball had been grounded.

And then there is the current Welsh scrum-half who grabbed practically every French player's shirt at some stage and tried to eye-ball him before the stiffness in his neck made him think better of it.  Very silly.

Mildly interesting that The French, with what one commentator described as Shaun Edwards's tightening up of the defence, have more points against than anyone except Italy, while Scotland, who spend most of the time in their own 25, have easily the lowest points against figure.  I suppose it could be a mixture of French indiscipline leading to undefendable penalty points and commentators not having a clue (perish the thought).

I can remember seeing Gareth Edwards getting a headlock on Willie John McBride and giving him a quick fist in the face on the ref's blind side. The TV camera got it, but the TV didn't count back then. Wales vs Ireland for the Triple Crown but I forget the year. They still loved each other afterwards. Ditto JPR Williams & Rive after one of their set-tos. All part of the game.

Both the Italy-Ireland matches have been postponed. Presumably that will give IRE a bit more rest before the biggie against France?
(assuming I've got the schedule right ...)

By the time that comes round the Coronavirus situation is likely to have escalated further.

I think the remaining matches will be played by Skype.

Good point. But it will only be a problem if people can easily move between France and Italy.

Better not let Hogg do it, then - he'll only drop it.

A good thing the Boy Farrell had his kicking trousers on today, because seeing out the last ten minutes with thirteen men on the park was not part of the script.

I wonder what's happening with the postponed England v Italy game.  I suppose the final result will have to wait.

It could be a long wait to get a final result.

Note that Ireland have a game in hand, so a lot actually hinges on the France-Ireland match, and whether the winner picks up a bonus point.

2001 Six Nations didn't get finished until late October thanks to Foot & Mouth.

France-Ireland now postponed (presumably due to the French authorities now banning gatherings of more than 1,000 people):

Seems to be varying mileage over the Wales-Scotland match - some of the tabloids are claiming it's off as well, but there wasn't anything on the 6 Nations site when I last checked, and the statement on France-Ireland is more recent than the newspaper reports.

Wales - Scotland still on according to Mr Google just now.

(This is so great, I could post it anywhere. But it's ideal for fans of Scotland's greatest commentator, and this board feels rather sad and neglected.)

Not quite 6-nations, but might have an impact next year.

Probably not the first Sarrie to go overseas, but definitely a big blow to them.

Unless they lose too many more I think they’ll be ok and, assuming we have a next season, should get promoted back to the premiership. Unless I’ve misunderstood the structure? Looks like he’s on a one year deal and he says he’ll return to Saracens.

Side of the Day were Scotland, I think. Wales failed without a crowd and not in the Principality Stadium. France and Ireland played themselves out of contention and Italy gamely kept England at bay. Who were disappointing.
