Resurrect the Wonderful Weald 100
« on: 10 November, 2023, 06:10:44 pm »
All,

Having recently spoken to  the original organiser regarding his Wonderful Weald 100 ride out of Hailsham, I’m considering taking over this ride until he is free to resume running it.

The ride starts and finished out of the Freedom Leisure Centre in Hailsham and take the rider over the levels to Pevensey and Cooden Beach before  continuing along the seafront to Hastings. From Hastings the ride goes up to Farlight before a feed in Winchelsea. After Winchelsea the riders will go to Rye before taking the Military Road towards Appledore before turning north to Sandhurst. After Sandhurst the riders then start their return to Hailsham.

I’m thinking of running this ride at the start of September, but looking to gauge interest before committing.

On a separate note I may look to resurrect the original organisers Fairly Flat 100, so welcome any feedback of interest for this ride.

I’m pretty sure I helped at Winchelsea a few times.

Never done the WW but have done a few 100k rides which head East from Hailsham, a very nice area and not too hilly (for a non AAA ride) so yes I'd be interested. Also very ECE-able

I don't know the Fairly Flat route outside of a Fairies context

Interested, participation dependent on wriggling out of other commitments that might emerge in the fullness of time. And excellent idea.
Besides, it wouldn't be audacious if success were guaranteed.

As the designer and for many years the organiser of the Fairies Flat 5 I didn't realise that the route has been subject to any major changes.  I must admit that Father Time has put a stop to any involvement for the last few years.

Grandad; I don't think the ride in question is anything to do with the Fairies' 5, I think it starts from Hailsham.

After the initial section over the levels towards appledore the route turns northward and starts hitting the short sharpe hills of the Weald.

Still need to work out the amount of climbing but not a AAA ride

Correct. I may have got the wrong name since was also called “for those who don’t like hills “ and I mistakenly recalled something like  fairly flat…

Sorry for any misunderstanding

That was the sister event to Hell of the Sussex Coastal Hills wasn't it?

Same day, same venue, a little less of the futility  ;)

I believe so but need to discuss with the original organiser since not a ride I did.

Based on this weekends ride of the Wonderful Weald 100 my GPX track when submitted to the Audax AAA Analyser site is showing 1174m of climbing over the 110.2KM route.

Wonderful Weald would be wonderful to see back, though the start of September tends to be holiday time for those without kids

I’m looking at September 7th or 14th to avoid conflict with other local Audax events in August and October.
