Title: Indi GSD.
Post by: delthebike on 01 September, 2010, 05:03:56 pm
I drove to the breeder today to introduce ourselves to the litter and specifically to Indi. The pictures below aren't always Indi as it was hard to tell sometimes as the puppies kept shifting about.
Indi is a GSD black long hair but he may turn up some tan later on. His Mum is all black and his Dad is an all white GSD. Good hip and elbow scores for both parents. We know the breeder and know the mother, grandmother and great grandfather. We wanted a bitch but there was only one in the litter and it was promised to someone who had waited over a year for one from this breeder.
We will collect Indi Sept. 19 when he will be seven and a half weeks old.

Too....much....cute....!

GSD puppies are the Best Ever. My first dog was a GSD and I took her home when I was nine and she was nine weeks.

Indi is beautiful.

Good thing his parents have good scores too.

Lovely dogs, but they are quite big.  I don't think Talisker would approve of me having one!

Indi and his siblings are exceedingly cute.

The relief is, they grow up quickly...

But what do you think of the dog?  :P

I let all five have a nibble of my hands and fingers but they helped themselves to the straps of my sandals and toes.

Indi is now home and happily wandering all over the place and whining when I go upstairs and bar the dining room door.

He was sick in the car but settled down after half an hour or so.

We have a pair of Dyson vacs and a carpet cleaning machine but we won't need those until later as where he is enclosed is wood or concrete floor, and the back garden.
So far so good with Indi.

Good stuff!

We just took Poppy next door to meet the chickens we're looking after. One whack of the electric fence on 15-week-old puppy nose means she won't be chasing chickens again in a hurry!

Result! Getting caught in the act of defecation and gently put outside now means that he has excused himself to the garden for relief(*) a further three times.

* Not executive relief.  ::-)

Edit: weighs in at 8.5kg.

Taking Indi to the vet later for a proper weighing, a check up and first vaccinations.

Post by: delthebike on 23 September, 2010, 05:56:37 pm
Our dog has an "outie" belly button!  :o  Which is a hernia allowing fat out of the umbilical hole in the stomach musculature or something like that.  We're happy as it's not serious and will be taken care of when he gets his bits chopped off in six months  :'(.  The vet, a nice Oz chap, says he'll be around 12kg in three weeks time when he has his second vaccination shot. I won't carry him from the car to the practice then.  ::-)

All in all in good health and the breeder has done an excellent job of documentation and treatment of her canine charges.
Title: Re: Our new fambly dog.
Post by: Auntie Helen on 23 September, 2010, 06:24:48 pm
The hernias seem extremely common, from what I can gather, and often fix themselves or get fixed, as you say, when they are neutered.

Tomorrow Poppy is 16 weeks (4 months) and weighs about 3.8kg. Less than a mouthful for Indi!

Hope all's going well with looking after Indi - the hard work only lasts about a month, then it gets a bit easier!

So far it's been fairly easy.  He mostly gets outside for his toilet but sometimes only gets as far as the conservatory, in which case we silently clean the mess. When he does "go" outside he gets lots of praise. He sleeps, or is very quiet, overnight too.

Sharp teeth, that aren't so little! Apparently chicks dig scars and puppies so maybe it's not so bad.  ;)

I still carry a scare on my ear from when my dog had a little fun one day when she was 10 weeks or so.
Title: Re: Our new fambly dog.
Post by: Auntie Helen on 23 September, 2010, 07:11:28 pm
Well I can reassure you that at about 14 weeks Poppy reduced her biting significantly, and when she does bite now it's generally not painful unless she's in a strop. She has transferred most of the biting to the many toys she has, which works better. Mind you, she does still bite sleeves which is irritating but has reduced the shoes/crocs/trouserleg biting to when she's in a strop.

It's all SOOOOO much easier when you can take them out on walks and they get tired from that.

Poppy has only broken the skin on my hands 3 times in all her biting - I think being a Spaniel with a soft mouth helps. And of course she's tiny.

Purchased one of these reflective harness and lead today.  Because he's black, at least mostly black he has tan spats and half a dozen white hairs on his chest, and with nights drawing in and dark mornings ahead it'll help him be seen.

It's a large size and too big for him ATM but I'm sure he'll grow into it.  ::-)

I bought a harness for Poppy (X-small) when she was 10 weeks old and she still doesn't fit into it. I had to buy an XXSmall for her which she's currently using.

We have a couple of spare Lupis and stuff like that for large dogs (lab sized) if you'd like them?

Puppy training yesterday and he was a lot more active.  Scared of a yellow Lab puppy, 1/3 his size, but not phased at all by the Wookie posing as a Newfoundland, an adult dog five times his size.  ???  He got over his fear/shyness though and ended up running around with the other pups.

First real walk today when we walked a mile(ish).

Life's so much easier when you can walk them, isn't it.

Poppy has been doing brilliantly with her lead training, usually walks with a slack lead very nicely by my side. This morning - all is forgotten. Pulling on the lead, lunging after leaves that blow past, appearing to have forgotten everything. Hopefully she'll have remembered by this afternoon. Sigh.

The initial meeting between Morphy and Indi was quite amusing: Morphy did his usual trick of rushing enthusiastically to the front door to greet visitors (not a guard dog, ours) but stopped in his tracks when he realised that another of his own species was on his patch. Indi had a mild panic at seeing another dog and hid behind Del.

There were then some greetings as they said their doggy helloes and soon we were off. Indi pulled a bit, Morphy pulled a lot but Indi seemed to grow in confidence as we walked down the road. When we got to the park, we let Morphy off and he did his usual trick of a bit of a rush round. Indi wanted to join in.

After a wander round the lakes and the odd chat with a few people we knew, including one Phyllis Williams, Dez's primary school teacher in 1986, we went home for a Nice Cup of Coffee.

It seems like he is noticeably bigger every day! He is very much a GSD and is getting that shape as he grows into his fur.  ::-)
More tan is showing on his chest and lower legs but the white hairs on his chest are still there. Some white on his tail too. Odd ears as the left side has more white/tan at the front than the right.

He's most definitely a dog! A 19.5kg dog.

If species were decided on people saying "he's like a bear" then he would be a bear.  ;D

21" to top of shoulder and today he barked for the first time. A nice deep throaty bark, not loud though. He'd seen a weird* looking cat in the garden next door. After watching it for a couple of minutes he decided it was alien and barked.

* It was a scruffy thing. The front half was ginger and black spots and the rear half was dirty white and black spots.

How old is he now? Poppy was barking from about 12 weeks and growling before then. The first time I heard her growl I thought it was a fart as it sounded so weird!

Poppy and Indi will have to meet someday Del. She attended the Kent ride today briefly.

He'll be four months next week. He's growled and yipped but it was higher pitched so I guess he's now a doggy teen and his voice is dropping/dropped.

Indi took a few minutes to get over the white stuff laying on the ground. He's been using the dog flap for a couple of weeks now, the last five days without encouragement and bribery. Today we had to open the door so he could see what was partially blocking the flap. A few tentative steps and he's OK with snow.
Now weighs 22.3kg.

This mornings walk in the local parks was good fun and we both had a good, slightly damp, time.

He's losing the fluff as his adult coat grows. However, we have lots of it all over the house!

I think he does although he does seem to get frustrated at the local dog training class, too much sitting and watching and not enough doing.

Poppy's gearbox removal was only £170 and didn't need stitch removal as she had skin glue. I thought castrating was cheaper then spaying. Mind you, she's only about a sixth of the size of Indi.

The castration was only £38 but it turns out that vets operate like Easyjet and add on extras. The little extras included anaesthetic, probably a good idea  ;), operating room hire, post op painkillers/anti inflammatory drugs, The Cone of Shame and so on. Plus the umbilical hernia was sorted at the same time, six of the ten stitches are for that op,

Stitches out!
He wasn't at all comfortable  :-\ with that procedure. First few were removed with the vet kneeling on the floor while I held his forelegs(WP) up and he was in a begging position. We changed to a similar position but rotated to get more light onto his abdomen and another stitch was removed. The last two were removed on the table, after a struggle to get him to lie down and roll onto his side, he looked very nervous while that was going on but was quiet and still with short breaths. He gave the vet a scare  :o by jumping off the table while I was untangling his lead.  ::-)

(WP) To aid some forriners who may be confused by the number of legs Indi has:
Although they are forelegs there are only two of them.
HTH  ;)

It's funny with dogs at the vets, it sometimes feels like "Yes I will allow you to do this if you must.  But first chance I get, I'm outta here".

Bless 'im.  Does he have a dog flap?  Is that how he obtains mud in the wee small hours?

Forefathers from Forfar not far from the Firth of Fourth over the Fourth Bridge. Phone number was 4444444.

He knows when he's close to the vets surgery and drags me in there. He usually takes his time to get out, he gets lots of fuss there, but today he couldn't wait to leave and dragged me out.
We have a dog flap but it usually is blocked up at 11pmish. Last night it wasn't!

That's not a muzzle, Wow, it's a Halti.

Poppy also wears a Halti, it's this year's dog fashion must-have...

AH is correct it's a Halti. It stops him pulling, although he really strains the lead when he sees a cat in his path, and gives you more control of the head and the rest of the dog. He doesn't like wearing it and off the lead will rub his face and head in the earth and then my leg to try and get rid of it.  ::-)

Well, they've all gone to the park - 3 canines and 4 humans (AH, Del, Dez & Mrs. Wow). I set off with them but was in too much pain and came back after only a couple of hundred yards.
Title: Re: Indi GSD.

A shame Wow never made the park we had a good wander. Poppy decided to run through the brook and molested a little girl in a lavender tracksuit. Said little girl now has fashionable paw prints on the legs and jacket  ::-). Indi had a toe dip but didn't get the nerve to paddle. Morphy became a duck!
It was odd seeing AH in civvies and not sitting down!  :o
Dez has a lot of video and I've got plenty of photos, which I'm shrinking so that they slide show easier. I'll pick the best and upload those full size soon.

Good fun was had by all - except for poor Wow with his painful back.

Poppy decided to flop after Indi left and sat on a selection of laps around the table.

She's now asleep in Lucy's basket in the study and I doubt I'll see much more activity from her today.

Thanks to Wow, Mrs Wow and Dez for their hospitality, and good to see Del again!

I only remembered you were out after I'd finished my breakfast, by which time you'd gone, so I had a brief chance to give Poppy a cuddle, which probably wouldn't have worked with Indi anyway, I'm not that strong!

Bit of a scare this morning. There has been a tree fall overnight and he got hold of a green stick, promptly scissoring cleanly through it with his back teeth. Unfortunately the piece of stick in the middle of his mouth wedged between his molars , the last pair of the top set. I thought he was choking   :o because he was very panicky and not making a sound. After a few minutes I managed to get hold of him and calmed him enough to have a look in his mouth. He had another couple of minutes of me soothing him, getting a bite bad enough to draw blood, through the skin on index finger, and eventually him relaxed enough and still enough for me to pinch the stick out.

No permanent damage, to either of us, and he went and found a paddling spot in the brook to take a drink.  ::-)

I've had that with My Labrador Ben; it's not fun as they don't realise what you're doing to help them.

I had to go on antibiotics a couple of years ago when helping Lucy get some rawhide out from stuck between her teeth. She bit my finger quite deeply and as I have to take antibiotics for wounds I had a Trip to A&E in Norfolk on New Years Eve. Fun.

Post by: Feline on 02 April, 2011, 05:14:34 pm
Having had quite some practice at getting things wedged in dogs mouths out, I would strongly recommend putting a solid object between the teeth while you reach in. Pretty much anything fatter than your fingers can work, even a folded up sock or glove or another piece of stick. They don't mean to bite you when you're reaching in there but they just panic and can't help it. At work I always use long forceps, sometimes the 'stick across the palate' one can be very solidly wedged and you have to get a very firm grip on it to pull it out.

There is a rather daft Jack Russell I have treated 3 times now when he has chomped up a newspaper and created a solid papier mache effectively glueing his upper and lower molars together. I have to lever his mouth open for him when this happens  :D

He sits in that corner and looks over the wire fence. If, while looking, he sees a cat he charges the wire fence. That's why the square trellis is not complete.

He cornered a cat the other day. The cat went into a defensive posture, arched back, fur up, hissing etc, and Indi just stood there, wagging his tail, looking at it and sniffing it waiting for it to start playing with him.

Mud doesn't bother us, we just hose him down and towel dry. The wood hinders his digging to the Centre of the Earth!  :hand:

A (very) short camping trip.

Where are these "new woods" of which you speak?

It's the newly planted woods in Cherry Orchard Way Country Park.
I use newly as in a few years ago but the trees are only just big enough to not be saplings and too thin to be hammock hangers. The going in is tight as they have yet to be thinned out or tall enough to go underneath the branches.

Our Jack Russell, Trixie, used to love oranges - and if you were eating an apple, she'd sit there and beg until you gave her the core to eat.  The sourer the apple the better.

She was one weird dog....

Sorry del.  That was my very bad joke about the black dog in the white snow.  We used to lose our black dog on dark nights when he ran off after stuff, when it snowed everything became easier.  Because it was a black dog on orange snow from the street lights.

One of my old bosses used to loose his black dog when taking him for walkies in the fields near his house, first thing in the morning, when it was still dark.

In the end, he got a childs hi-vis vest that he put on him, and that way he became much more visible!

I considered putting hi-vis velcro straps on Talisker in the past, and might have to think about doing the same with Zev (once she works out the complicated mystery called the cat-flap), since black cats, even with retroflective collars, aren't that easy to see.

I used to have epic problems losing my deaf elderly chocolate brown (and grey) poodle in the dark. If he wandered off I couldn't see him, and he couldn't hear me call him either. Oh, and he was also pretty blind. I once had a search party of 20 people looking for him when he wandered off at Cheddar Reservoir. I then purchased him a flashing collar which worked a treat  :D

My current dogs are also invisible in the dark except for the white tip of the collies tail, but collar flashers don't last long on them because they tend to swim on every walk. They can at least hear me though. It was a bit hairy cycling through the Winscombe railway tunnel with them when I didn't have any bright lights with me because I couldn't see them at all. I ended up walking the middle bit in case I hit one of the dogs and fell off.

There is a cloth strap attached to the door which he has to pull with his teeth, although he seems to be battering the door to get it to bounce in the frame and open enough to get his nose/paw in the gap.  ::-)

Had a lunchtime stroll in Priory Park where we found Wowbagger looking at spawning carp and looking for a missing Morphy. A very wet Morphy reappeared soon enough and played with Indi. (I've got pics but picasa isn't letting me login to upload) Wow left with Morphy and Indi and I went to the far end of the stream for a paddle. Then we went to the Brook and washed off the detritious from the first paddle, it was lovely and cool!  ;D

edit: Now I can login again here is a slideshow of Indi and Morphy.

He's lost his favourite ball!  :( He "fetched" the ball and came back but instead of letting me lob it again he scampered off to the stream in the conservation area of the park. The stream is about 10" mud and 2" water. The ball is a solid rubber job to which has been added a cord and a lump of silicon sealer to glue it in, this silicon makes it float.
Alas when he dropped the ball into the stream he trod it into the mud and couldn't find it again.

The shiny stuff is mud.

Indi has been to the vet today. He has been holding his rear right paw up when walking and licking it. The vet thinks a harvest mite has irritated the paw and then Indi has inflamed it by licking. So we have cream to apply and some washing and drying before application. He is not impressed with his new Cone of Shame to stop him licking his paw!
A lightly shaved toe area.

Yes because Indi discovered how to circumvent that particular obstacle!  He'd lay down, put the cone on the floor and hold it down with his irritated paw and lick away. It only needed to be on for an hour or so after applying the cream so we kept him amused. It's cleared up now and it just needs to regrow the shaved area to look normal again.

A quick visit to the vet today. £120!  :o
Went for a look at his left ear 'ole as he's been digging his nails in and bleeding from the scratches, previous treatment we've used before hasn't worked this time. Vet had to sedate him as he was getting very agitated and nervous about the vet looking into his ears. Also shaved his knotty lumps of fur from his rear, inner, legs. Came home with a very sleepy dog with chillier nethers and four pills to calm him for a return visit on Wednesday.  ::-) Because he gets lots of knotty fur we've been advised to get a cordless trimmer, only £18 and I shall use it on myself too!
Bald GSD anyone?  8)

I've fenced off a section of garden to keep Indi away from the Vicious Killer Attack Tortoise, aka Harry, and vice versa!
Now that they are separated the torts have most of the garden again and Indi has his piece. It hasn't stopped Indi barking and howling at the torts when they get too close to the fence or when VKAT attacks humans in his domain.
Should VKAT ever make to Indi's side there will be DETH but I wouldn't place money on who would be the survivor!  :o
Title: RIP Indi GSD.

This is a post that I have dreaded to make.
Our Indi has not been himself recently and rather than prolong his pain and dementia we decided, along with our trusted vet, that it was time to euthanise him.

He died peacefully with his family beside him in what was a very quick send off.

A most splendid dog of the first order keeping us safe for over twelve years.  :'(

Commiserations.

Really sorry. 12 is a fair age for a GSD.

I took ten tennis balls to the local parks this morning, and lobbed them onto the fields that Indi and I used to take our walks on. The balls were the ones that he found and kept hold of all the way home so I am just returning them for other dogs to find and use.  8)

I'm so sorry Del. It seems like yesterday you posted about getting him. It's so rough. It's sweet of you to return the tennis balls for others to enjoy.

Cam had dementia and I know it is a very tough thing to watch the decline.

Yes, as others say, sad and difficult to lose a pet.  :'(
