Are there any recommendations to be had for a particular press, for occasional use?

Ours is either a Breville or a de-longhi, can't remember which, but it's served at least 8 years

I would say go fro one with a single continuous hot plate area, rather than a triangular toastie maker.  Ours is also a flat one which makes an easy clean up.
