I don't have time to think of ten, but Magma would definitely be in at number one. Prog-rock in operatic magnificence!

Dunno about Belgian ones, but among my very favourites are the French bands:

Trust
Mano Negra
Tri Yann

I also rather like:
A Singer Must Die
Emma Tom
Fabienne Shine
and, up to a point, Shakin Street.

Renaud (even if he is a shambling wreck these days), Telephone, Les Negresses Vertes, are we allowed MC Solaar, IAM, Yann Tiersen, Manau etc.?

What about Patrick Rondat and his band - I like to think of him as a  french Joe Satriani!

I've just been watching a video of Nono - Norbert Krief, the legendary (& compact) guitar genius with the embarrassing perm from Trust (and Johnny Halliday's band :-[ ).  Remarkable.

I nearly forgot Brigitte Fontaine. 40 years of avant-garde music. Recently she has collaborated with bands such as Sonic Youth and Gotan Project. Some seriously weird stuff in the 60s and 70s.

I don't think of Gong as primarily French. David Allen was Australian and Gilly Smith and Steve Hillage English. It was only Pierre Moerlen's late 70s early 80s incarnation of Gong that was mainly French.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

How about Stereolab? (mostly french one of them is my cousin....), I guess most of the 80's on have been covered by the previous posters. Anybody mention Plastic Bertrand (Belgian)....

Are Gong truly French? Fronted by an Aussie and a Brit. Only post trippy stuff were their `French' credentials revealed.

Belgians had cool names such as The Dinky Toys and the Erotic Innocents...
