Frame repairs and painting in London?
« on: 22 June, 2016, 10:28:53 am »
I have a couple of steel frames, including a Brompton, that need new paint, a few braze-ons and some other metalwork (one has a Raleigh-threaded BB that I want converted to standard English). Any suggestions on suitable London-based folk?

The interweb has thrown up:
http://www.armourtexcycles.co.uk/our-services-prices/prices/ for powdercoating only

Thanks but aside from anything else, they aren't in London. I'd like to actually talk to the person with the frame in front of both of us.

I used Armourtex to paint the frame of my recumbent, they charged a fair price and I have no complaints. Easy enough to get to as well on the Overground.

Mario/Winston Vaz are recommended frequently over on LFGSS. Not used him myself as he's too far away from me.

I was hoping for recommendations.

Dave Yates is top of the list. Yes, I know he's in Lincolnshire but that doesn't preclude him from doing a complicated job. Modern communication is a wonderful thing.

Geoff Roberts is another superb frame builder. If nothing else you can find him on faceache or I'm pretty sure fixedwheelnut will be able to point you in the right direction. I could help with a powder coat but not frame mods. HTH

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

I had a frame resprayed by Mario Vaz and he made a right pig's ear of it.   Couldn't even follow instruction which was discussed by telephone and repeated clearly in writing.

I would have been better off getting a local powdercoat instead.

Cheap?  Yes.  You gets what you pay for.

I would not recommend Vaz for paint. However, I had a some braze OBS done through him and everything was fine.
Oak cycles also get a lot of good reviews.

You may be thinking of Tom Donhou in Hackney http://www.donhoubicycles.com/

.
.
(not to be confused with the Paul Donohue of Cougar frames who I would never recommend after a bad experience some years ago).

Given that my trike has had a rear axle tube replaced and I never got round to having the Brompton repainted, time to update this thread. The plan is to blast and repaint my trike, my Brompton and possibly my Pomp (depending on price). I figure that if all are the same colour and done at the same time, the total cost might be somewhat lower than just adding up individual prices. I'd prefer to drop off and pick up the various frames myself (hence close to London), rather than relying on the tender mercies (and cost) of couriers.

Few bicycle frame painters near London refer to painting Bromptons but a couple refer to painting Brompton frame parts, which suggests the frame and stem hinge pins need to be drilled out/ removed before the frame parts are handed to the painter. I plan to completely disassemble and rebuild the various machines and so it looks like I'll be replacing all the Brompton hinge pins and swingarm bearings. Very few refer to repainting trikes (or tandems or other complex machines), so I guess photos and quotes will be needed.

https://ctc-powder-coating.co.uk/our-work/bicycles/ prices start at £75, in Essex
https://www.armourtex-powdercoating.co.uk/bicycle-powder-coating starts at £200 and goes up very rapidly from there, in Hackney
https://www.colour-tech.co.uk/prices/ wet spray prices start at £140, in Kent

There are several general powder coaters around that are probably quite a bit cheaper than Armourtex but I have no idea which ones are likely to do a good job on a bicycle.

There are a couple of London bicycle painting specialists quoting prices from £400 and up for a single colour on a steel bike.

What are people's recommendations, given the above info?

No experience of the others, I used and was very happy with Armourtex about a decade ago, though since then they've been taken over and there's been some dissatisfaction posted elsewhere.  The guy who built their bike reputation now runs Aurum Finishings in Dartford, I've seen a couple of frames and they look as good as my Armourtex, I don't know prices.  They can pick up/drop off from a couple of London shops if that's easier, there's a looong thread on the subject at LFGSS.

I'd avoid armourtex.  Good experience for industrial stuff, then the messed up some car engine tin ware.  EDIT this was a few years ago, but not been back since.

Is Tottenham too far from you?  There is a powdercoater there, that I have used to powdercoat a few old kenwoods a701 that came out well.

I live in NW London and am considering options in Essex and Kent. I’m more concerned with painters doing poor quality work or overly-aggressive blasting. More than £200 for a single colour powder coat on a frame and fork seems a bit rude though.

You'd get a single colour enamel paint job done for about 130-150 quid at Bob Jacksons - when I was running the LBS they did an amazing job on a retro frame I rebuilt for a customer . . . but the 3 months quoted for the job turned into 5.

The one I used is by the unicorn works on garman road I think.

EDIT: The works building was damaged by the nearby fire and was demolished.

I want my machines back on the road in weeks, rather than months. I would have thought that painters might be a little light on for work at the moment.

Aurum Finishing is a little slow in replying to enquiries. Single colour with clear <£100.

H Lloyd are remarkably quick in responding to enquiries for transfers, both in stock and custom.

Brompton stickers can be purchased cheaply from lots of places but eBay isn’t one of the cheap places.

Argos had no problem doing my Brompton and they are working at the moment (the only difference is that you're not allowed to cross the threshold)  They are among the most expensive but they do a very good job.  I would trust them to do it without seeing them face to face - they have done more frames for me than I can remember.

Bob Jackson are good for paint but avoid them for any repairs or modifications.  They made an utter pig's ear of my old Thorn's fork.  I think it ended up with a spacing of 80mm!

I am powder coating the Brompton and trike with Aurum but HK wants her Roberts to be enamelled (£230 vs. £140 2 colour powder coat, 4 week vs. 1 week turnaround).
