You've done well, wearing out your tyre already mcshroom, you only just got the bike!  Enjoying it then?   :)

Oh definitely enjoying it. The tyres on the bike aren't new though, they are ones that I had on my old MTBSO a few years ago. It's not the first Continental tyre that I've killed the sidewall on. Obviously not build for heavy riders like me :-[

Right off to the LBS to see what they have in stock. For once them specialising in MTBs might be an advantage :)

The main reason I avoid Continentals is that the sidewalls are made of cheese. Waffer-thin cheese at that.

I have far too many recollections of long walks home as a result of the sidewalls on Conti Top Touring tyres self-destructing to trust any of their tyres now - in fact, it reminds me that I'll need to source some alternative tyres for the Croix de Fer (I like the tread on the stock tyres, I don't like the fact that they're Contis)

Singletrack did a good article a while back on front/rear tyre combos for various conditions - that's how I ended up running Smorgasbords and Saguaros. I'll see if I can dig up a link or similar - it was quite informative.

If you could find it I will be interested in a read. I got a Schwalbe Black Jack to tide me over in the end. It looks reasonable without being massively aggressive.

In other fettling, I've done some decent work on getting the Dawes into touring shape. Front and rear racks fitted, new 11-32 cassette fitted, bent rear mech replaced and new chain fitted. Also replaced the rear blocks that were down to their last dregs. Unfortunately I worked out the wheels are now rather concave after cleaning them, so the bikes got a spare black set on  which doesn't really match, until I get round to doing a couple rim transplants.

I agree that contis are awful for splitting side walls.

Finally replace and light fitting in the sitting room, Bodged the fitting on so will see if the GU10 LED lights with more adjustability will give more light.  Finally refitted the connections to the light fitting in the bedroom.  Both of those things have taken ages to actually do, spent more time worrying about it than doing it.

As far as MTB tyres go, there is only one worth using...

Actually yesterday, but I sorted out the lighting/charging system for the TD bike - after a couple of false starts, I'm now running the light (Supernova E3 Triple) and the eWerk directly from the dynamo; my attempt to chain the eWerk off the trailing leads on the light didn'tWerk, probably due to lack of current (they're used for the tail light, which I'm not fitting)

Anyway, it works, but with both the light and the eWerk/cache battery being used the light will only run at full power at ludicrous speed so at some point I'll be fettling an inline switch between the eWerk and the hub so I can disconnect the eWerk without having to faff around with connectors. Also, a pox on B&M for using coaxial cable on the eWerk leads.

Finally, I did this:

You can tell it's a Surly product because of the integrated bottle openers ;) Normally I don't bother with chaintugs, but given that this bike will be ridden in some pretty hilly terrain I figured it might be a good idea and whilst the Surly TuggNut is more expensive than most, it's very well built.

All that remains is to put a bit of Sugru on the bits of the dynamo connector that the heatshrink couldn't cover, which is this evening's job now that I have Sugru to do the job.

Not today, but on Sat fettled an exposure Q/R handlebar bracket onto my hope vision 1. Bucks Bikes in Aylesbury even gave me a stainless bolt to suit for free (!) which was a pleasant surprise. Also fitted a maptrap.

Pushed some Salmon Koolstop pads into the rear cartridges of the Tektros on the Pompino.
If I hadn't, I'm pretty sure that by the time I get to work tomorrow, if I braked, it'd be metal-on-metal  :o

Changed pedals on back-up bike. Old single-sided SPDs were horrible to engage, replaced with MTB pedals.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Fixed my knob so it screws on properly.  The thread had stripped on a knob on my chest of drawers, so I made a makeshift rawlplug out of a bit of cable tie cut into pieces (Opinel No. 7 was the tool of choice).

My knob is now firm again.

Unfettled a number of Molex connectors (hard disk wires) so I can make a system for swapping my dynamo lights and wheel between bikes.

I've ripped the wires from the schmidt spades twice now so something a bit more designed to be unplugged is in order.

You, sir, are a genius.

I have been trying to work out to molish some wiring splitters for my dynohub.

One thing I have LOTS of are molex splitters...

After spending hours looking for places to buy them new in quantities less than a hundred, I came across

http://www.pcbheaven.com/exppages/Reuse_and-or_extend_the_Molex_connectors/

Gives the skinny on dismantling the plugs and sockets for reuse. Chuck in some heat shrink and you should do alright.

Ugh.  Those molex plugs are horrid enough in computers.

Tamiya connectors are my weapon of choice for quick-disconnect dynamo wiring.  Same sort of open-so-the-water-can-dry-out-quickly deal, but better at self-aligning.

Alternatively, if it's not being exposed to the elements in the disconnected state, Weatherpack or similar.

I wanted a plug with 4 ways, otherwise I would have used a Tamiya, but also I have lots of Molex plugs and sockets lying about for modification for free.

Found a rather nice Sony Discman that I had put away several years ago. Took out the corroded batteries and cleaned the terminals up with some vinegar using Q-tips and it burst into life ! Its got a line out so now I have pressed it into service as a replacement for the CD player in our HiFi stack that died a few months ago. Now to find the Discman wall art that must be in the house somewhere .....
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Lots of fettling of my Dave Yates. I noticed that the headset was rough (around about last summer), so I was after replacing it, and I bought some shiny new second-hand lights.

So I stripped the frame down and cleaned it as best I could, given that it needs a new paint job, removed and re-greased the bottom bracket, then cleaned all the crud off the chainset and chainring. That wasn't a job to be taken lightly.

I also replaced the cables and cable outers, fitted the new headset, replaced the bearings in the rear wheel, finally replaced the seat clamp bolt with something more fit for purpose than the M6 nut and bolt I've been using since 2009, added a pump peg so the Zefal sits along the top tube, shinied everything up, and - importantly - fitted some mudguard stickers. I also had to replace the aluminium shims which shim out the seat post and fork crown. This involved purchasing items in aluminium cans.

The Supernova E3 Pro is impressive.  The cable out to the rear spoils the looks a bit, but utility trumps aesthetics. The rear light mount required some bodging, most of which is covered by the red reflective tape that I bought at the Shop of Hi-Vis on DP Gupta Road in Delhi. I knew that'd come in useful.

I want to go out to check how much better than my IQ Fly the Supernova is - but it's blowing a hoolie out there.

Not exactly fettling, more putting into fettle - I hoovered the inside of my Carradice! Does anyone else ever do this, or am I the only one who gets so much dirt and bits in there?

Yep.  Usually what happens is a paracetamol or something escapes from the packet, then rattles around until the bottom is covered in gritty white powder.

It's not a proper Carradice if the cotton duck isn't lined with the residue of a five-year old banana (or similar).
