Title: Show us your ink (the tattoo thread)
Post by: kyuss on 23 September, 2010, 01:11:38 pm
There are plenty of mentions of tattoos in various threads on here, yet no specific thread with pics of forum members ink (and I'm certain there must be a few out you out there).

So here it is, the forum members tattoo gallery. C'mon, get yer tat's oot.

I'll start.

I've often hankered after a small discrete tattoo, maybe a small bird or something, probably near my groin or top of my leg.

I thought a swallow would be most appropriate ;)

I wasn't going to show this one because it's crap, but.....

Done when I was 16, paid for by my dad. Often thought of covering it up but it reminds me of who I was back then, and how awesome my dad is (how many dads would even allow their 16 year old to get a tattoo, never mind pay for it).

Fans of chainring tattoos might like to cast a glance at my chum Joel Metz's website.

I see he's now branched out from chainrings to include a Sturmey Archer sprocket.
He usually rides PBP, so next year you might be able to see them in the flesh, so to speak.

I'm not generally a huge fan of tattoos, but some of the shapes on that website - both on the skin and in silhouette - show how beautiful a chain ring can be. This is an art form which seems to have been sadly neglected, in favour of rigidity and light weight one presumes, in recent decades.

Swallows are also the symbol of freedom.  Often found on ex-lags, tattooed on the joint between the thumb and forefinger.

I shall get Mr R to take a photo of my tatts - a swallow and rainbow flag on my right shoulder.

They're also birds that come home year after year - which is where the sailors' swallow comes from.  I think the lags got it from the tars.

I've got a traditional English fox-hunting scene tattooed down my back. You know, the sort of thing you'll see on your granny's table mats. Huntsmen resplendant in pink and a fox's tail just visible poking out of my arsehole

My first was a simple three-cornered Celtic knot on my shoulder. One day I'd like to have it made more elaborate. I can't take a photo of it myself, so you're not getting one. My next was a more elaborate but still quite simple Celtic knot on my foot, which was ouchy.

My last is a Celtic crescent moon, on my hip. I can't take a photo of it and preserve any kind of modesty, so you're not getting to see that either. That one has a little jog in it because every time the tattooist went over my hip bone with the needle, I flinched. (This was in the days when my hip bones were relatively near to the surface).

I would like more, but I'm still thinking about what and where. Obviously I've considered ACAB across my knuckles. If I had more knuckles I'd go for AWVMAB.

Would any of the male yacfers consider a narwhal along their groin with an appropriately placed spike?

Kirst,   I have a very similar tattoo to the one on your foot on my upper arm.  It's not the best in the world, but I quite like it that way.  It's fading quite a bit now too (I got it 16-ish years ago), which I also like.

All the men in my family have tattoos, I always thought it "normal". I like my uncle's on his forearm which is now more than 50 years old - it is more of a black silhouette now which always seemed very manly to me.  My wee brother is 21 and has about 5 really fashionable tattoos, personally I think more old fashioned, maybe a bit crap ones are more cool.  My wife however does not agree and hates the fact that I have one.

Swallows are also the symbol of freedom.  Often found on ex-lags, tattooed on the joint between the thumb and forefinger.

Swallows on the hands generally meant (at least in HMP Barlinnie and Saughton) that you had "fast hands", rather than freedom, and suggested you were a bit hard. Personally, I got mine for the symbolism of home as they were originally a sailors first sign that he was close to land, and as Andy says, one of the few birds that return to their birthplace every year. They are also one of many birds that choose a mate for life, so symbolise loyalty.

This thread has inspired me to book a consultation appointment to alter my tattoo on my shoulder.

Excellent! Where are you getting it done?

Right, that's my consultation over. The simple 3-cornered Celtic knot on my shoulder is going to become a 5-pointed star with knotwork. I'm getting it done next Saturday and I'm very excited about it.

I was amused to see that Tribe was full of freshers getting eyebrow piercings.

You should move to Northampton.  Goths never died out there.  They sit in St Giles' churchyard smoking dope, occasionally getting beaten up by the local chavs.

There was a shop at the top of town called The Black Rose which only sold goth clothing and accessories, but it's closed now.  Maybe they now have to take a train to Milton Keynes, which is a bigger shopping town and positively inspires widespread gothdom.

Oh, there's an idea. I could get the faces of the YACF top 100 posters tattooed all over my body. Or the coolest things on the cool wall.

I went to Tribe today and had my shoulder tatt altered. What was a 3-cornered Celtic knot now has a 5-pointed star around it, with some knotwork in the arms of the star. It's much better, but it looks a bit odd because the original tatt looks its age and the new work is all shiny and fresh.

Can't find any piccies  :( but I did happen to hire a car the day after I had it done and there is an imprint left on the driver seat where the clingy didn't stay in the right place.

That brings to mind a phenomenon I'm observing at work, noticeably among those who hail from the eastern badlands like Dagenham, or equally, Southend: increasing numbers of old ladies with tatts on their tits.

Need I elaborate?

I've got 2 tattoos. One behind my neck and a big tiger tattoo round my hips and ribs.

It basically mean that there will always be things in life that will pull you down, but eventually you'll get through it. And that's how I see life.

The second one is here http://www.killerhotgirls.com/hotgirl/932/like-the-tattoo?.html (http://www.killerhotgirls.com/hotgirl/932/like-the-tattoo?.html) . Not sure if it's appropriate to post it in this thread. It's the one in the middle.

France has banned most coloured inks used in tattooing, on the grounds that they are carcinogenic.
