Normally Aspirated Human - he's getting there
« on: 10 May, 2012, 02:55:47 pm »
I dunno if any of you have been following Mike Hall's progress. The last 'official' chart had him on 20 960km after 78 days (but that's elapsed and includes transit days).

He needs to cover about 28 000 in less than 96 days to get the record (although that isn't really very clear, there is a supported and unsupported record).

As far as I can tell, he is on-target to take several days off the record.

Currently in the usa, making great progress. He tweets progress and comments several times a day, many of them with a dry sense of humour (stopped by US border police wanting to know what I was doing cycling near the border in middle of night).

The man is a hell of an athlete. Plus, how can you fail to support an athlete whose training regime includes checking how fast he is after multiple pints of Timothy Taylors Landlord?

If you want to check up on him, look for his website http://normallyaspiratedhuman.com/ and follow the links.

The record is actually 106 days; there was some confusion at the start of the world cycle race but that's now been clarified.  That was set by a guy who had a camper van driving behind him all the way, but there's only one record recognised by Guinness.  Barring disaster he's on pace to break it, and even including disaster he could probably still break the unsupported record, which is 150+ days (and isn't recognised by Guinness as a separate record, but who cars about them anymore?)

Mike is a multiple winner of 24h MTB races and he raced the Tour Divide last year, so he's always been a favourite to win this.  He's also a Yorkshireman, despite now living in Bristol, which must help him no end!

You're mentioned in his latest blog entry, Bunners!

On Tuesday 20th March 2012 having tracked Mike Hall’s progress regularly over the previous couple of days I made plans to try to meet with him as he passed through Bunbury Western Australia,
;D

Oh, and I'll support him as a Yorkshireman who had the good sense to move to Bristol!

He's from there, but I thought he moved down to Briz a couple of years ago.

He's tweeted that he thinks he's on about 17 (so now 72) racing days so far, factoring out transit time.

What's more, he's finished America and is in transit back to Europe.  Iceland is apparently being dropped off the route as he has enough distance already.

yeah, I saw he's struggling to *not* cycle and just sleep.

Any idea how far he has to go now?  Where are you getting the details from, I find the http://worldcycleracing.com site a bit useless

Mike's estimated a June 4th finish: that's this Monday.  He's in Spain, his riding time when he docked at Lisbon was an estimated 83 days 10 hours.  Read about it here.

I managed to catch it - the interviewer didn't really have a clue - but Mike himself was amazingly coherent.

The last 1500km have been hard - he said that at about 1000km to go, mind, body and spirit were falling apart.
