Phil Lesh, who plays bass like a guitar that happens to be in a lower register.  He's good at noise, space, and silence and was pivotal to all the Dead's best improvisations.

Vic Wooten, who's  a remarkable virtuoso.

In jazz, Charlie Haden and Dan Berglund (EST) come to mind.

I like bassists...
