Come on, though - does anyone really think Stacey Solomon is thicker than Brian Moore?

Brian Moore was a solicitor.  I leave it to the panel to decide whether this is the province of a thick-o O:-)

Sicily Unpacked - BBC2 9:00pm tonight.

Andrew Graham-Dixon (art historian) and Giorgio Locatelli (chef) show each other their favourite things in Sicily.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I wouldn't have watched that but my wife put it on and I got drawn in. I enjoyed it far more than I would have expected. Some of the people they had to deal with were pretty awful, but it seemed to be edited to make the police look bad as well (yes, I know some might say this wouldn't be hard, but it seems quite a deliberate, calculated and cynical move on the part of the film-makers).

You missed Star Gazing Live last night, on BBC2.  They were cramming too much in, so leaving little time for detailed info, but still it was a nice watch.  More tonight, I think.

Can't stand Pretty Boy Cox.

My son's school are taking part in the star-gazing tonight - making good use of their new £2m observatory. Tempted to go along, though I might just save it for one of their regular open evenings when it's likely to be less busy. Likely to be better than watching that nobber (to use his own favourite word) cooing over the magnificence of the universe like a loved-up puppy.

Strange, he seems perfectly intelligent, unassuming and witty.  Any reason in particular?

Personally I think he's precisely what the subject(s) needed for a TV audience.  I find his enthusiasm rather infectious and his credentials can't be argued with (On top of that he's had 2 rock/pop careers).

One man's unassuming and witty is another's superficial and glib.

That's just the problem - the programme is made for the average TV audience... It's great that he's making it cool to like sciencey stuff but religion would be cool if the Archbishop of Canterbury had those cheekbones and a floppy fringe. Where's the substance? (Coursing around Brian Cox's veins, probably.)

The real substance of the subject is probably in a Degree course at University.  This is prime time TV.

It sounds like you're blaming him for his bone structure...would you be happier with some 1970's Open University lecturer geek with bad hair and B.O.?

I'm struggling to see the problem.

The BBC didn't just get Hugh Grant to present their popular Physics programs, they went to a  British particle physicist, a Royal Society University Research Fellow and a professor at the University of Manchester. He is a member of the High Energy Physics group at the University of Manchester, and works on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.

The fact they found someone with that CV capable of presenting to "an average TV Audience" is a miracle.  He reminds me of Carl Sagan (the person who made this stuff cool and interesting for me on similar programs back in the day).

I suspect dislike for Brian Cox is partly to do with him being one of those people who appears to smile even when he doesn't mean to, just due to his bone structure and teeth.  You shouldn't find him terribly annoying once you get over this.

I am Mr Average TV Viewer, perhaps albeit with a slightly greater appetite for science than Mr Pure Average.  I get as much substance as I want from Cox.  I'll go elsewhere for more if I want more.  I do find his tone too monotonous for an hour-long documentary, but he's just fine for a few mins here and there.

There were plenty of other people in front of the camera last night besides Cox, including Liz Bonnin.  Liz happens to provide candy for my eye as well as food for my brain.  She genuinely knows her stuff.   I love Dara Ó Briain as well, who knows some stuff and is genuinely enthusiastic on the subject.

I can't explain it better than I already did.

Where are the science programmes for people with more than two brain cells to rub together?

BBC4.  Star Gazing Live is on BBC2.  The last man on the Moon was impressed with the programme.  It's good enough for me if it's good enough for him!  I only have two brain cells, so I like it.

I prefer to make up my own mind.

I'm not having a dig at anyone who likes the programme. I expressed an opinion, that's all, and expanded on my reasons for that opinion on request. I don't like it but, as ever, YMMV.

I gave up on Pan Am after the second programme because it was so very very awful. I am happy that The Good Wife is back though.

The Good Wife continues tonight and new series of The Big C (More 4) and Mad Dogs (Sky 1).

Jonathan Meades on France was excellent last night on BBC4 - there are more episodes to come.
It was a day like any other in Ireland, only it wasn't raining
