Vista disc space weirdness
« on: 10 September, 2008, 07:14:58 am »
Vista claims that 99Gb of my C drive is used. This seemed a bit high to me, so I ran a disc analysis utility (Jdisk report)

This only reports 33GB of files and directories found

Huh?

Where should I be looking for the missing space (never had this with XP). I am on an admin account.

Not used Vista much but can you empty the Deleted Items - that may not count to your quota

Hidden system, backup, deleted items, and disk images perhaps? Or you have too much Pr0n!  ;)

I promise you - I've not got 65Gb of deleted files.

Nor have I got 65Gb of Pr0n.

I'm struggling with a concept of hidden files occupying twice as much space as eveything visible. Even a recovery file shouldn't be more than 10GB (and the recovery is on a separate partition in any case)

I had this problem on  Linux partition.  Half the apps wouldn't run due to lack of space, on a disc that was no more than 25% full

It turned out to be a disc indexing/tracker file that was several 10s of gigs in size.  Deleting that sorted it.

It may not be the same thing, but i bet a pound to a piglet that it's a hidden system file of some sort

OK - went googling - looks like it is system restore points (15% of the drive)
