Spectre

It's a Bond film, that about covers it.
I feel like Captain Kirk, on a brand new planet every day, a little like King Kong on top of the Empire State

Water

an unusual Indian film in that it has a plot that does not revolve around spurious dances apparently in the Swiss Alps as a quick change from Mumbai.

This one was set in Bombay (as was) in 1938 with the backdrop of the growing independence movement.  The plot is a child bride whos is widowed and sent to live in poverty in a house of other widows of all ages.  A depressing fate as widows were very unlikely to get re-married at that time as there was a taboo against doing so.  Anyway, a bloke fallls in love with one of the widows, his parents say no, she kills herself, he buggers off with Ghandi's independence mob and the closing scene is one of the widows handing the child bride up to him on the departing train, I'm assuming with an implied bright future.

The best Indian film I've ever seen apart from a few Raj Kapoor numbers

I wouldn't argue with the ones it won but if anyone had felt short-changed by it not winning Best In Show I should be inclined to shun them.

Max Max and Mightily Miffed Road wasn't that bad. Or good. It's a Mad Max film. People dress up like they're trying to upset their mum and zoom around a sand pit in glorified go-karts. I did think driving from A-B to first half of the movie and back from B to A in the second was bit of cheating. She could have been driving to her nan's and back.

I didn't actually mind The Martian as a movie. It was the book that narked me. I can put aside bad science and windy days on Mars but then I wasn't the one saying how accurate the damn thing was. Other than, it seems, the bits that weren't accurate. As mentioned, watching Damon get rescued again is always good value, I'd pay those billions to get him back from his nan's. Just not in a go-kart.

It had good editing and sound.

(according to the Academy, anyway - I haven't even seen it).

You need a lot more to make a good movie.

Spike Island

Mancunian inbetweeners tragically fail to see a performance by a popular beat combo.  Watchable enough, but I suppose you had to be there.

Power In Our Hands

British Deaf Association archive[1] footage spliced together with interviews and given a civil rights narrative.  Well worth watching, though it is a bit of a BDA love-fest.  Already being familiar with most of the politics[2], for me it was about seeing the language evolve over the course of a few generations, from furtive, high-baud-rate-low-throughput fingerspelly sign to the evocative BSL we know today.  Some thought-provoking stuff on the importance of film/video as a historical record for sign language users.

Made by Deaf people, so lots of refreshingly sensible camerawork and annoying plinky music.  In BSL with English subtitles.

ETA: Expanded 'BDA' for clarity.

Took me a while to work out that "BDA" wasn't a reference to the engine fitted to rallying Ford Escorts ;D

The first Mad Max was a brilliant revenge movie. Subsequent episodes focused on the costumes and car chases rather than the story.

Haven't seen Fury Road yet but I can't imagine it's any worse than Beyond Thunderdome.

The Theory of Everything

A slow paced romantic biopic about a clever man with an inadequate body, and some wonderful women.

Taken 3

Exactly what I expected, given Taken 2 and the reviews of this film. I was therefore not disappointed in the slightest. An enjoyable romp.

Die Hard 2

Haven't films come on a lot in the last 25 years.

The first Mad Max was indeed a darker affair. Then they applied increasing levels of silly to the sequels. The Mightily Miffed Road sits somewhere to the south of Thunderdome. It does make tremendously little sense though.

Inside Llewyn Davis on Film4.

Great music, and a great snapshot of the period (I imagine). I hated the main character, but sympathised at the same time. It's a good movie.

I like Coen Brothers movies anyway, though I refuse to watch the Ladykillers cos it just can't come close to the classic Ealing comedy. Tom Hanks is no Alec Guinness and there's no one like Herbert Lom.
