You gotta see it. We all know what happened on the Hudson in January 09, seen the footage of New York's Coast Guard, Fire Dept and others rescuing the passengers from the sinking aeroplane.

Perhaps what we don't know is the story of the crew, the potentially adversarial stance of the investigation board and the vindication of the pilots.

Beautifully crafted and well worth seeing. Watched it twice this evening. Mrs. Torslanda, of the horned helmet and heavy metal breastplate, insists we go and see it again. This time in a cinema . . .

The first Bourne. As good as ever.
Nativity. Weird Pre Sherlock and Hobbit vehicle, seen through a mind altered by a temperature. Odd to see Coventry in a film.
Filth. A cross between Trainspotting and the most recent Bad Lieutenant version. Wouldn't matter whether you were hallucinating from a temperature or not. Enjoyable corruption, violence, drug taking and doggie style asphyxiophilia.

A longish piece, but worth reading especially the bit about the film's depiction of the investigation team.

The 'adversarial stance of the investigation team' (the NTSB inquiry) was an invention by Clint Eastwood to introduce some dramatic tension in what would otherwise have been a documentary. Looked at as a fairly casual observation of people's reactions post-event, it's quite good, and the flying sequences are actually very accurate for the most part, but I think it lacks some of the detailed content it could have supported with a good enough script. It'll probably win an Oscar for Tom Hanks (who is very good), but it won't be remembered as a great movie, just an adequate shorthand description of the event for those who don't want to get bored looking at the detailed reports.

Would it not have been entirely reasonable for the investigators to be adversarial in the interests of actually protecting the pilot from less qualified accusers?  e.g. the gutter press?

However experienced the crew, they must have had their own moments of self doubt as to whether it was right to take the extreme measure of landing the plane in near icy water instead of heading for the nearest runway!  It's true some aircraft are designed to land on water but this one was not.

Investigators who accepted without question the actions of the crew would hardly have been doing their job and it was right that the pilot had to put his case if only to ensure maximum value from his experience for future use.

Certainly the film made it look accusatory but perhaps that was also how it felt to the crew?

(I did see the film and thought it was very good)

It's on Netflix (in Canada anyway) and it actually works for the most part, although it does loses the plot completely at the end.
You may have to have a gaming background to enjoy it..
Sharlto Copley is pretty good in it too.

Ah. I suspect the problem lies somewhere in the fact that - of the 3 films Jaded mentions, I've only seen Nativity which, I think, features neither a Greek taverna nor a bank.

Film about a bus driver who writes poems. Talk about elevator pitch.  Anyway:

Film

Jim Jarmush directs a languid film
That through varying repetition
Fills the audience with
Unexpected joy.
Adam Driver,
Who has cut through air with light,
Steers the story with his craft.
Truth told, nothing much happens,
But in that space there is poetry.

Rogue One.
Still not sure what to think. Different than the 'classical' Star Wars, for sure and certainly not bad, but it was a bit messy. Surprised by the ending.

I quite enjoyed it.  Didn't go expecting a Star Wars movie, and kind of didn't get one, so that was good.  Definitely part of the whole, but sufficiently different to feel like a standalone film.  Actually, thinking about it, it felt a bit more like a Marvel origin story than Star Wars.  I think the ending is about right, considering the placement of the film in the sequence -

Also Rogue One.  I have only seen one other Star Wars film and have little idea of who is who or what planet they're on.  Enjoyed the effects including the way the sound shook the auditorium.

I liked it a lot (although the first half is uneven).

It was pretty much the ending I was hoping for and I'm glad they did it that way.

Eye in the Sky
I found this gripping. It is rare that a film grabs my attention so much that I don't wonder how far into it we are, or how long I have to wait for a pee. It's an ethics film that pits dithering politicians worried about the Today programme against soldiers that have spent six years waiting for this moment.

I remember seeing the trailers and reviews in the summer and thinking it wasn't for me. It's a 99p rental on Apple at the moment, and having seen it have been very happy to pay full whack in the cinema.

Nativity 2
Not as good as Nativity. Mind you I only saw 2/3rds of it and I'm still ill. Should this be in the Christmas Films thread?

The first Bourne. As good as ever.

No matter how many times I've seen it, whenever I catch it on TV I always end up watching it again, from whatever point in the film it is.

I love the bit in the snow with Clive Owen, at the holiday chalet, that starts with, "The Dog's gone missing".

Jason Bourne is responsible for the Bond franchise raising their game I think (although I much prefer the grittier Bourne films, with a total absence of Casinos).
Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.

The Omen.

Maybe a portent or possibly a harbinger.  We seem to be watching a sequel in real life across the Pond :o

Rogue One, I enjoyed it,but I don't think it will stay with me like the other Star Wars films. No instantly quotable lines, and the score seemed forgettable.

It was lot like taking a WW2 movie, and just shoving it the Star Wars universe. A bit like Where Eagles Dare or Guns of Navarone but vs the Empire.  I look forward to when they start releasing films about the Rebels escaping from Empire POW camps.
