Carradice bag construction - spacing of support straps.
« on: 17 October, 2015, 08:27:25 pm »
I have just noticed on two of my saddle bags (a Nelson and a Barley) that the straps are not set equidistant from the edge of the bag flap. Is this a machinery/setting out/design requirement? e.g. two finger widths to one corner reinforcing collar and three finger widths to the other.  I have another Nelson in the Garden Shed and will check that tomorrow. In practice this means that the bag hangs slightly off centre. This of course can be just part of the character of the hand made bag and is not a serious issue, but my curiosity has been roused.

I have two Campers Longflaps.  The 1972 one is 3mm out (1/8" really because we did not do mm at that time) whereas the 2015 one is 12mm out.  Materials and construction techniques are noticeably different.  Now I know I will have to make sure I put heavier stuff on the short side to balance the bag, I've been using the old one for 43 years and never noticed I was going round in circles.

I just checked my Barley and everything is precisely near enough quite accurate.  Well it'll do, anyway.

The first one was obviously made before Nelson lost his eye. ;)
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Carradice often sell off bags with such alignment defects on ebay.  Can only think that yours slipped through QA and really should have been sold as a second.

Or a retailer bought seconds and sold them as normal kit, but I doubt this.
