We’ve just had an ‘all hands’ call with our General Manager and the union chap that works with me put some numbers to him about the public announcements the company made yesterday. The GM managed to mis-understand him which was a shame as I thought he was better than that, but anyway...
A pessimistic worse case scenario is that two thirds of my level and above are to go, with the first compulsory redundancies in the company in its history. By some stroke of luck for the company, the pension scheme that us oldsters are members of is to close at the end of May. The scheme gave us very good protection in the event of compulsory redundancy. Bastards.
However, given the numbers involved, and the work that we do, I’m not altogether sure I want to be in the ‘lucky’ third. There’s going to be a lot of blood on the carpet wherever you are I feel.
For every complex problem in the world, there is a simple and easily understood solution that’s wrong.

I can appreciate that the lack of mahogany* from our DIY shops is due to the "tropical hardwoods" shame campaign, but are brass bolts an endangered species?  I've just been round one of our local emporia and through the web sites of two more, and you'd think that brass was on a level with the Northern White Rhino for scarcity.

*come to that, beech and oak aren't that visible either, and even pine isn't available in anything but thin sections. Shit & damnation.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

How bloody inconsiderate of Sir Alfred McAlpine to put up his new tower crane on his Woking site at the weekend. There's a building full of engineers most disappointed to be deprived of the chance to watch the Big Meccano go up.

There's bugger all interesting going on inside the building.

Further to my above grumble re tropical hardwoods disappearing from DIY shops: when I was stumbling round our local effort yesterday I noticed a light wood called ayous in quantity, although not in any sizes I could use.  Back home, I looked it up: it's also known as obeche, abachi, wawa or samba, and according to Wiki it's harvested in an unsustainable manner in some areas.

In other words, they're cutting out the obvious tropical hardwoods for the sake of political correctness, and selling another less well-known one instead.

As a retired copper, I will defend my serving colleagues. Sometimes, when dealing with the public, you just have to use easy to understand language. To do otherwise is the surest route to despair.

The number of times I have wanted to murder someone because they don't understand/ listen/ comprehend is untold. I avoided due to bad career move.

Speaking on behalf of The Cotswolds Free Peoples' Liberation Army it soon will be.  However that will be the limit of our territorial claims.  We have no other territorial claims to make in Britain...  :)

Clivden? You are welcome to it at the moment. I had to negotiate the barriers and shit around it this afternoon whilst attending the automotive fettlers to collect No.2 Sons Turbo Nutter Bastard1 after its annual service. God but the road has been narrowed by the sheep pens and cones and Rozzer Riot Wagons all looking after Meghans abode for the pre wedding evening.

I also texted a former colleague to ask him about the foopball cup match tomorrow. he is an ardent Chelski fan and goes to That Wemberley lots to watch them. He is a plain clothed intelligence specialist in his day job. He is doing a night shift in uniform tomorrow :o I'm surprised his still fits ;D Apparently just about everyone from Thames Valley Police is on duty at some stage for the next 24- 48 hours.

Family members observed that while driving round town on Saturday there was hardly any traffic where usually it is chocker. Do people actually stay at home just to watch the royal wedding? Which raises the question, why are they out driving normally - where are they going that's even less important than the royal wedding?  :-\ ??? :demon:

seem to be many cyclists around Twickenham called Isabell

The answer is yes, especially on shared use paths next to a busy main road where you can't be heard over the traffic.

Only one warning this evening when out running and I'd already seen him out of the corner of my eye as he followed me across the pedestrian crossing at a roundabout

Trying out some new contact lens because Vision Express are apparently discontinuing the ones I use. Seemed OK, until I got to my destination and tried to read a computer screen. Now it feels like my eyes have been pushed out of the back of my head.

Turns out the samples are wrong size. FFS.

Anyway, just checking online, and it seems the ones I currently used have been discontinued for a newer, even betterer version. I dunno why she couldn't just have offered me those. Cheaper by lots online too... I keep meaning to transfer to the local optician. You don't want to know how much a new pair of glasses has just cost me.

Oh, and while I'm Amazoning for stuff, what is it with the people who answer the product questions with 'I don't know.' They do realise it's not personal correspondence, don't they? And the ones that write reviews along the lines of 'this product didn't arrive.' Maybe, and this could just be a crazy suggestion, you should probably speak to the phone droids or send them an email, rather than write a review.

Suspect Amazon customers are responding to emails asking a question via Amazon just to get it out of their intray and forestall more querying emails.

Is that how it works? They've never asked me a question. Maybe I don't buy enough crap. And if I didn't know I just wouldn't bother answering it. It's not like they send the Amazon Answer Police around is it.

I have had querying emails mostly when I have bought cables or interfaces for David.

Truth is I don't know if a cable I bought for David's chainsaw is compatible with a Flymo lawnmower.

Queries are usually of that nature.

I am now worried about the Amazon Answer Police being a thing. I could have been ignoring the requests, I'm fairly handy with the delete button. They could be hiring renegade TV licensing agents. One night I'll be woken with a harsh light in my eyes and man screaming 'HOW LONG IS THE BATTERY LIFE?' HOW LONG, MOTHERFUCKER??? and if I don't answer they'll waterboard me with a wet dishcloth (99p for 3, norkkim101 asks 'are these suitable for waterboarding midgets?')

ETA: I apologise to all midgets for calling them midgets. Little people. Who shouldn't ever be waterboarded. Especially by renegade TV licensing agents. That's what ATOS is for.

London

not so much it being London, more what it brings out in my personality traits vs nice rural middle-of-nowhereshire.

Feltham station, some hipster cnut just walks right in front of me, turns and gives me "that look" (needs lessons from Paddington) when I accidentally clipped his heel.  My response was a passive aggressive "you just walked into me mate, don't look at me like that"

When I almost bumped into someone in Ely station it was apologies all round

When I first took my middle-of-nowhereshire raised children into the big city I soon realised I needed to teach them ‘London manners’ just so they didn’t end up getting pushed around and end up last in every queue. It really is a very rude place.
