tandem tricycle
« on: 31 March, 2008, 03:59:32 pm »
Hi ....a few weeks ago ...cycling home from work I saw the unusual sight of a tandem tricycle heading north out of Portsmouth with two riders of a 'certain age'.   i really had to pinch myself that i had seen it!  are tandem trikes really that unusual ?

They come up on eBay every so often.  I can't say that I haven't been tempted.

You'll see one or two on the Mersey Roads and at other TTs.

But they're very, very specialist things.  Quite terrifying to ride, I'd have thought.

But aren't you tempted:evil:

You tend to see a few at York.

Tell you what Charlotte - fancy going halves on one?

The tandem crews we captain can switch bikes with remarkably little hassle.

I remember about 3 years ago seeing a couple ( Mid 60's age) on a Tandem Trice recumbent. They were the parents of one of the guys at I.C.E. and were just testing it out for a few weeks. It looked abolustely stunning!

Mr B has in fact done it with several partners of both sexes.

You've got to learn to ride it first, otherwise you just end up in an undignified heap under an awful crows nest of metal tubes and wheels (I've seen champion tandemists do exactly that).

I have a nice pink Bob Jackson long-barrow in the garage.

It has been well-used touring much of Europe with my eldest daughter stoking with kiddie cranks and youngest daughter in child seat  ...and a tent on the back.

Great fun hairing down off the Central Massif   ;D

They are a bit grown up now so it may be changed to a standard configuration.

Saw one out on the Jack and Grace Cotton (Bristol) BP100 earlier in the year. Geoff Booker (Trykit) had one through his hands recently. Trykit conversions of a tandem bike are not uncommon for stokers with some particular disability.

I think you guys would need stilts for the captain if we can fid one to fit. If it's a bit small we'll point it your way.

Now the minor technicality of finding such a beast at a price that is acceptable for soemthing that would merely be a toy.

I paid 350 quid for mine about 5 years ago. Bob Jackson, fairly old, small adult/large child back back.

I think it was somewhat of a bargain.

I sold it for the same amount last year.

He'll be fine - he rides the same size as Charlotte, and I'm sure he'd look lovely in platform heels anyway. ;D
