I call bumps. I even called them when I went out to the pub without anyone on the back who needed to know!

The Hamax seats are more sprung, but the Co-Pilot ones are much more supportive and you don't want someone as small as Iris bouncing about too much. I have my Co-Pilot seats on my tandem which has 20 x 1.75 tyres and my winter/mountain bike with 26 x 1.5 tyres so they have a bit more padding. In the winter, a cozy-toes/footmuff for a stokke pushchair (2 legs) works well and is very cosy.  :)

I love that there exists in the world a forum where calling the bumps to a 9mo baby is not regarded as eccentric. :D

Why should that be eccentric?
She could be saying 'bump' back to you by Christmas!

I just call bump. Maybe I should try a Gruffalo impression.

I can recite the entire Gruffalo's Child by heart. Perhaps a bit long winded for a single bump though. Or i could bastardise it to "aha! oho! a bump in the snow! Whose is this speed bump and where does it go?"

 ;D

Nice summing up.

In my mind's eye you're already cycling to work in full barrister get-up because of not being able to take the suitcase, so that would be a most excellent addition!

Loved the photos too, btw. May have forgotten to type that out loud before!

I still don't speak Gruffalo.... maybe I should look it up on Wikipedia or something.  I made the mistake of asking "What's a Grufflao?" in the presence of barakta's mum once.  In classic Teacher Of The Deaf style, she ran off and came back armed with *puppets*   :hand:

A Gruffalo? What's a Gruffalo?
A Gruffalo! Why, didn't you know?
He has terrible tusks, and terrible claws,
and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws.
He has knobbly knees, and turned-out toes,
and a poisonous wart at the end of his nose.
His eyes are orange, his tongue is black;
he has purple prickles all over his back.
Oh help! Oh, no! IT’S A GRUFFALO!

Bah, beaten to it.

Anyway, I always call bumps for the boy while we're out - using a rack mounted Yepp Maxi, even with a 2.2" MTB tyre at 30 psi (tubeless  ) and it's still very direct.  Going to swap to a QR version on the cantilevered bracket soon for a bit more movement.

I don't do gruffalos. Not sure why but there are a lot of children's books that I actually like.

Ah, published in 1999, no wonder I'd only vaguely heard the term.

It's like Harry Potter:  One minute the world was normal and ordinary and we only had to worry about things like New Labour and Spice Girls and AOL CDs and so forth, and then suddenly everyone was talking about this stuff like it had always existed, leading to a strange state of discombobulation.

It's probably a glitch in the Matrix.

A Gruffalo is a creature you have tea with, and that's good in my book.

I don't remember worrying about bumps, but like the Clariflies we had a Hamax (I wasn't aware this made a difference, it was simply what was available at the time and place) and he was bigger when we started anyway. I do remember riding through puddles being the funnest thing ever. And being pushed in the back, "helpfully", whenever we went uphill.

The pictures, I need not say, are delightful.

Oh, I've just this millisecond had an idea; it would be especially adaptable to a Circe, I think, but a pair of solos could do it too. You need two baby seats, one baby and one of those village hall urns full of tea. And two mugs. I'm sure you get the idea already. Perhaps you need a method of preventing baby scaldings too. Perhaps tell the baby there's a Gruffalo in the urn?

She still doesn't like the bumps (if she's awake) - any hints as to how to cushion them a bit, or do they just get used to it?
A sheepskin is wonderful.
Lets air around them, gives some cushioning, doesn't get stinky if wee'd on.

Depends. Tigers come to your house, but Gruffalos invite you to theirs. I'm not sure what happens if you meet both together; probably you should hope there are no woozles.

A few thoughts on this

1. I expect she spends a lot of time resting the back of her helmeted head on the chair back, making big bumps particularly annoying, so I guess more padding in the chair will help, especially at the back and sides.

2. Front line suspension (i.e. fat tyres) has to be a good thing.

3. Experienced cyclists unweight the bike slightly by lifting up off the saddle when they go over a pothole, using the knees as suspension for the upper body and head. You probably rise out of the saddle in anticipation of a bump without even realising it. So, not rising up and instead remaining fully seated would weigh the bike down and therefore lessen the shock through the rear wheel to the rear of the bike, which is where your little passenger is.

Caveat: IANAparent and I have no 'baby cycling experience' so all of the above could be aloadofcobblers.

Wondering of anyone else had solved this one, I googled 'baby on a bike' and I found this. Which your baby would love.

Blimey, take a break from this place for a while and look what happens. Many many congratulations!

Yeah, I suspect the seats that attach with the prongs are a bit springier, but I love the way we can move the seat from bike to bike and still have a decent rack on there.  Downside is that you can't carry panniers.

Hamax Kiss with the extra height mounting bar allows you to use the rack with panniers even with a tiny frame like my hackbike:-

For sale, good condition, £40 includes both the normal and extra height mounting bar (but only one frame bracket, but they can be found for £15). Collection from SW15 or nearby Royal Park. Grumpy child not included. Happy to lend it to you to try out first.

It'll last for ages, the last ride MiniGB had in it was to take her to school when we were late one morning, she was 20kg or so then.

MiniGB now tearing it up on her own CNOC 16.

Looks like a fantastic solution to bike n baby n panniers. Then I can also take a lock, and get it to whichever court I'm in. Happy days!  Yes please.

That's a ridiculously cute grumpy child too.
