The Petworth Start of Summer Time 100

https://www.audax.uk/event-details?eventId=8142 (https://www.audax.uk/event-details?eventId=8142)

The 2020 Petworth Start of Summer Time 100 is an amended version with a shortened Stage 1 and longer Stage 3 that removes Henley Hill from the route. However, after the initial running of this revised route in Oct 2019 it was suggested that Stages 1 and 3 should be switched.

It still consists of three loops centred on Village Hall at Hampers Green.

Stage 1 (46k) leaving the Start Control you head N, eventually passing the Hampers Green Community Centre Hall before turning towards Balls Cross avoiding the main A283. Soon you arrive in Kirdford before heading N to Plaistow and the first Info Control. A short section N of Plaistow before you are heading W through Chiddingfold and the second Info Control near Combe Common. You now head S before passing through Lurgashall, to the boundary of Petworth House. After the only significant climb of the stage you are soon descending through Upperton joining the A272 at Tillington. After a short section on the A272 to Petworth you arrive back at the Hampers Green Village Hall, Petworth to control.

Stage 2 (40k) initially on a main road you head S out of Petworth towards Duncton Hill, but instead of climbing it you turn W towards Cocking on country lanes. Back on a main road, and the easier climb out of Cocking you head S to the village of Singleton (Info Control) before continuing E again on country lanes towards Upwaltham. Re-joining the main road, you head N back to the Petworth and Hampers Green Village Hall control, but with a DESCENT of Duncton Hill.

Stage 3 (26k) returning to the centre of Petworth you take the High Street near the Start Control to join the original main road route E to Fittleworth and the fourth Info Control. From Fittleworth you head N on country lanes and the climb of Bedham Hill before joining the A272 into Wisborough Green. After the fifth Info Control you head towards Kirdford before taking quieter country lanes towards Petworth, before a short downhill section of the A272 before the Arrivee at the Hampers Green Village Hall.

The Petworth Start of Summer Time 200

https://www.audax.uk/event-details?eventId=8141 (https://www.audax.uk/event-details?eventId=8141)

The 2020 Petworth Start of Summer Time 200 is an amended version with the Western loop, with it climb of Duncton Hill, undertaken first.

It still consists of two loops centred on Village Hall at Hampers Green.

Stage 1 (36k) initially leaving Petworth N on a main road before you turn W through Lurgashall and Fernhurst on country lanes. Further country lanes after Fernhurst take you W to Elmers Marsh before you head N to Liphook (INFO). From Liphook, you head SW on the former route of the A3 to Petersfield and the well-used Esso Petrol Station to control.

Stage 2 (49k) from Petersfield you head SE to South Harting before climbing Harting Hill over the South Downs, and then passing through Chilgrove to Lavant. After a short section on a main road in Lavant, you are soon skirting the N of Chichester to the second INFO. You return to Petworth via a main road, that includes a descent of Duncton Hill, before returning to Hampers Green Village Hall to control.

Stage 3 (34k) returning through Petworth you are soon heading SE through Pulborough and Storrington into Steyning. Passing though Steyning you take the lanes through Botolphs and Coombes to the traffic lights crossing the A27 for the third INFO.

Stage 4 (35k) retracing back to and through Steyning, before heading N to Partridge Green. From here you continue heading N on minor roads to join the A281 for a few hundred metres into Lower Beeding. You then remain on the B2110 into Handscross, before arriving at the Pease Pottage Services (near Crawley) to control.

Stage 5 (56k) leaving Pease Pottage you head W to Colgate before heading N through Faygate and Rusper. From Rusper you head NW towards Capel. A short section on the A24 is needed before turning W towards Cranleigh. The main road could have been used, but you are taken down Were Street, passing through Paynes Green, Oakwoodhill and Walliswood before reaching the outskirts of Ewhurst. Back on a main road you are soon in Cranleigh (INFO) before heading SW, passing through Alfold, Loxwood and Kirdford, before arriving for Arrivee at the Hampers Green Village Hall.

Very timely post.

Seeing as my cycle commute is now a maximum of 2 minutes, I've been thinking I need an incentive to get out on the bike, so audax is the answer and I've registered for the 100km.

Back from a very damp and windy route check of the 100.

Expected crud / mud on the minors lanes, with a number of last year's road repairs / surface dressing now all needing some attention!

Was pleased to see that the council had put in a number of runoffs to keep the water off the roads, but near the end of Stage 3 which presented a large flooded section.

I'll be doing another route check for the 100 closer to the event date (along with one for the 200) and post amended GPS and RS on the AUK calendar page(s).

Finally, it appears that the Coop situated at the entrance to the Pound Street car park is either shut down / undergoing a refurb. We will see exactly what is happening on the 200 when I try to obtain a receipts for my organiser ride....... [Update] Appears that the Coop is undergoing a refurb but yet to determine when this is expected to be finished.

Early April, Anton, but you're in luck...there's a temporary store in the Old Swan Hotel, already open for business, until then.

Is this essentially the end of summer route in the opposite direction?

The End and Start of summer Time rides are the same it’s just following feedback from previous years done some changes.

For the 100 it was suggested that the climb in stage 3 was best done at start of the ride.

For the 200 a lot of feedback that the climb of Harting Hill towards the end would be best done sooner. .

Hopefully these changes will be acceptable. We will see

Corrected GPX Track, Route Sheet and Small Map now added to The Petworth Start of Summer Time 100 Calendar Page.

I'll be emailing the final versions of RS and GPX once final checking completed nearer the event date.

Entries for The Petworth Start of SummerTime 100 and 200 are coming in at a steady rate. Just waiting for the normal PayPal rush in the last week before entries close.

Entries for both ride close after March 22nd 2020, so please get your entries in before this cutoff date.

I’m in the process of finalising all the route sheets and GPS tracks, since after the recent weather conditions some sign posts are now missing, there are also roads blocked with either road works or flooding. Hopefully these obstructions will have gone before the event so alternatives will not be needed, and I may also have to supply changed INFO controls ( :( ).

The latest versions os both will be emailed to all entrants the week before the ride.

On the 200 I'll be including alternative directions that avoid the Washington RAB, since this will be reached in the afternoon and not the early morning like previous editions of this ride.

Unless circumstances change I intend to run the above rides on March 29th.

However, since the 100's visit the village hall 3 times and the 200's twice I'll be taking steps to hopefully minimise the risk of spreading COVID-19.

There are still plenty of cards for the 100, but the 200 is nearly full and I will have to start using old cards with photocopied inserts soon :)

Entries close March 22nd.

Looks like panic buying at my local Supermarket will have an impact on these rides.

4 tins of rice pudding and no peaches between the 60+ riders may not go far.

These rides have now been cancelled and emails sent out to all entrants.

Refunds will be given once final cost are determined.

For those who suggested their refund is given to charity, I’ll denote it to the TrusselTrust.org who support food banks .

Thanks to all the riders who entered to supported these and hopefully see you on the Petworth End of SummerTime rides at the end of October.

Thanks Anton for all your efforts. In this period of confinement I might actually get round to working at an ECE route to these events.
