Any recommendations about the best route or direction to ride from Nice to Bilbao?

I will only have 3-4 days for it so will need to go fairly directly.

Not sure about route, but can help wtih the direction - it's west.

Wow, it’s about 1000km from Nice to Bilbao so riding that in 3-4 days is impressive. Can’t tell you an exact route but generally follow the med coast to Beziers, head inland to Toulouse then across to the Atlantic coast at San Sabastián. This avoids the Pyrenees.

Can't speak from experience, but one day I'd love to do some of the 'diagonales' and this is close to the Menton-Hendaye route.  Details of routes taken (a bit out of date) by riders can be seen here:

T42 has done a Diagonale and knows a few other such riders. I think there are a couple of other Diagonalists here.
