Recaptcha nonsense
« on: 03 August, 2018, 05:17:57 pm »
Mr Sainsbury's House Of Toothy Comestibles has suddenly started asking punters to identify the pictures with $OBJECT in them.  Which Lt. Col. Larrington (retd.) cannot see clearly enough to answer.  If he pokes the headphones icon for the audio version he gets this:

WTF?
by Mr Larrington, on Flickr

It would appear to be a load of nonse, but how to make it go away?  It's doing it on a Several of different OS/browser combinations, including his brand-new Lenovo Android tablet that hasn't had time to have its cache filled with nonsense.

[Not really an answer]

I've just put in an order for Sainsbury's and it DIDN'T ask me to identify things on photies, having done so for my previous 3 (I think) orders.

Mebbe their software gives up after a while with 'genuine' punters.

ReCAPTCHA works with major screen readers such as ChromeVox, JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver. ReCAPTCHA will alert screen readers of status changes, such as when the reCAPTCHA verification challenge is complete. The status can also be found by looking for the heading titled “recaptcha status” in the “recaptcha widget” section of the page. See ReCAPTCHA ARIA Status Messages for more information.

Sometimes I get the Captcha stuff, sometimes I don't.
I concur with Mrs P. that the images can be laughably shit.
My experience with JS customer services is (so far) pretty good.
I recon if they were spoken to, they might turn off the Captcha feature for Lt. Col. Larrington (retd.)'s account.
Although I suspect that call might have to come from Lt. Col. Larrington (retd.) himself.
It has to be worth a try.

He has phoned them; they said "use the audio option".  Which doesn't work

Do you need a screen reader to use the audio?

I think it's supposed to Just Play.  Apparently it did for a bit but now it just coughs up the message in the first post.  I have sent them a Strongly Worded E-mail.

If practical, send them a copy of a Tesco receipt as well.

Logged on this morning; no nonsense about pictures with buses in them.  How long this state of affairs continues, however...

This has caused us to abandon using Sainsbury's online shopping entirely.  One of the pictures said to tick the ones with street signs in, when actually they evidently meant road signs, which are not the same thing at all.  Hopefully if enough people whinge, they'll understand it is losing them business.

They have also not endeared themselves to us lately, by a) no longer stocking basics hot chocolate, either online or in store, and b) every time we shop, giving us a voucher for money off basics hot chocolate...  Bastards!

 ???

What am I missing?

Surely 'street signs' is simply USAnian for 'road signs'?

The most amusing one of these I got asked me to click on pictures of "horns". There was nothing that I would call a horn, but clicking on the photos of trumpets worked just fine. This was amusing as it was on the most excellent "Separated by a Common Language" blog, which is, you've guessed it, about the differences between American and British English...

My understanding is a road sign is one that might feature in the Highway Code and a street sign would state 'High Street Anytown'.

I think we're back to lumpers and splitters with that one.

I'd call "High Street Anytown" a road name sign.  Even if the road is technically a street.

AIUI in USAnian English (like they speak on the internets), it's street by default unless you're talking about the physical surface.

Possibly, but this is Great Britain, and Sainsbury's is British.  Why the hell should I be expected to interpret into colonialspeak just to use their bloody website?  What the matter with them, they have passwords and stuff, why the need to some sort of twisted quiz game just to buy stuff from them?

It would be bearable if it was just one "puzzle" but quite often it just reloads another test again and again and you end up having to make  50-100 clicks  to get to the end!!

The worst one is click on the photo with a "store front".

I'm not sure this one is a case of lumpers and splitters. I expect it's just Yanks and Limeys. In any case it's not actually a problem unless they have some photos with street signs and some with road signs, in which case it becomes a problem of both lumpers and splitters, and Yanks and Limeys.

Part of the purpose of Recaptcha is to digitise text and train computer vision. ie by typing in words, it helps to transcribe books. The photos of street signs mean they could use Google Street View to automatically make maps.
