I assume he had a Sun Life over 50s plan, so the funeral will be a belter.

I vaguely recall Parkinson starting on some rather hostile questions to Muhammad Ali.  Ali squared up slightly in his chair, Parkinson shrank into his and changed the subject.

Back when Michael Parkinson was working in Australia, there was a point where Elton John was out on tour over there too. Ever the lavish host, Elton invited Parky and his wife to join him out on a yacht for a little party he was throwing.

Unfortunately, Parky and Mary arrived to the jetty a little too late – just in time to catch the HMS Elton sailing off towards the horizon. A couple of obliging water cops recognised Parky however, so offered the couple a quick ride out to the vessel.

A few minutes later, they were aboard. But far from being happy to see them, Parky was greeted by a furious Elton. It turned out that the rest of the party had mistaken Parky's lift for a police bust, so had lobbed all their gear overboard. Thousands of dollars' worth of narcotics were lost to the deep, ruining the party for everyone – so the Parkinsons were pariahs for the rest of the night.

My favourite was when he failed to interview David Bellamy, Patrick Moore and Magnus Pyke. He introduced them, and had to sit back and let them get on with a freewheeling conversation about science. All I remember him saying after the intro was ..goodnight.

My favourite one was an interview of Ustinov, who did his opera singer routine. Wonderful.

Just overheard a Sun Life ad in the telly with what sounded like Carol Vorderman.  You’d have thought they’d have waited until he was cold before they replaced him!

I think Cazza "five blokes on the go" Vorderman has been doing those ads for years now.  Possibly since she turned 50.

I never took a lot of notice of Michael Parkinson when he was a chat show host. But I read this piece by Peter Hain, and Parkinson has gone up in my estimation.
